Memorable moments in the making!

Through immersive cultural engagements in Belize, visiting students get the unique opportunity to step into the rich heritage of the Yucatec Maya in western Belize. Shaping traditional pottery by hand connects learners directly with ancient techniques preserved across generations.

At Toucan Education Programs, we believe that education abroad should be deeply experiential. By engaging directly with local artisans and community groups, visiting students and educators gain a deeper respect for Yucatec Maya culture, heritage preservation, and sustainable community living.

As the work week winds down, at Toucan Education Programs, we are taking a moment to look back at the 2026 to date in Belize.

While the clinical and field work in Health, Biology, and Behavioral Science defined the core of visiting students' experiences, we are equally struck by the moments in between. The long conversations shared over meals, the collaborative energy in lecture halls, and the deep bonds formed during extracurricular excursions.

These snapshots capture the heart of Toucan’s programs: cohorts of dedicated students learning from each other just as much as they learned from the curriculum and the host community. We are grateful for a season characterized by intellectual curiosity and genuine human connection.

Cultural competence has become an essential pillar within the contemporary workforce. Toucan’s credit-bearing Exploration of Cultural Diversity summer program offers a hybrid model consisting of 4 days of remote learning followed by 13 days of in-country engagement.

This summer field program enables students to critically examine the historical dynamics of Belize’s multicultural society, such as Indigenous Maya, Garinagu, Creole, and other cultural groups and their heritage, through a rigorous experiential summer program.

In an era of increasing global migration, it is imperative to embed critical analyses of migration, identity, and diaspora within the higher education global learning curriculum.

Belize serves as a valuable case study in understanding how migration and significant historical events, including natural disasters, shape a multicultural society where cultural preservation is encouraged, a perspective that is highly sought after by both visiting students and educators.

Higher education institutions aiming to enhance their summer abroad offerings with credit-bearing programs focused on migration, cultural history, identity, and intercultural development will find the Exploration of Cultural Diversity to be a valuable addition to their global learning portfolios.

Dates for the 2027 Exploration of Cultural Diversity program will be announced later this month.

Exciting updates from Toucan Education Programs!

We're delighted to announce Toucan’s Applied Sustainable Development multidisciplinary summer field intensive program in Belize; 2027 dates will be announced later this month.

The Applied Sustainable Development program is a good fit for students interested in exploring the complex interrelationships of sustainable economic and community development.

This immersive experience provides students with practical insights into the social, economic, and environmental challenges faced by small tropical developing countries such as Belize. It offers 3 transferable U.S. academic credits from Shenandoah University.
