Hi all! I’m Gloriann Zhou and I am interning for TCMS this August. I am entering my last year of undergraduate at Boston University studying Biology. My focus is in marine ecology and conservation. During my time here I’m looking forward to continue to learn conservation efforts, develop engagement opportunities, conduct benthic communities, and gain insight on the operational side of a marine station! Very blessed to have Ally be my mentor this month 🏝️🦞🌺

Hellooo everybody! My name is Joshua McField and I’m super stoked to be joining TCMS as one of this months interns. I’m Caymanian- German, currently finishing off my undergraduate in Global Environmental and Sustainability studies. I’m excited to learn more about marine and coastal conservation, especially in terms of community-based resource management. Additionally, I’m keen on learning and bringing local community perspectives/knowledge to global climate conferences and negotiations which I try to regularly attended. This place is amazing and I look forward to all the learning this coming month 🌞🪼🐢🌊

June was a month of connection, curiosity, and hands on learning at To***co Caye Marine Station 🌊

We had the pleasure of welcoming the University of Florida, several Education First (EF) student groups, and our first intern of the season. Throughout the month, participants immersed themselves in Belize’s marine ecosystem through lionfish dissections, reef tours, beach cleanups, and other hands on conservation activities.

We were also proud to support Arianna as she developed her own seagrass monitoring project, transforming an idea into meaningful field based research. 🌱

To everyone who visited, learned alongside us, and shared in our passion for protecting Belize’s marine environment, thank you for making June such a memorable month. We look forward to welcoming many more ocean advocates throughout the rest of the season! 🪸🐬🌊

Hello! My name is Bilal Saleem, and I am happy to be joining the TCMS team as this month’s intern. I received my bachelor’s degree in Biology from Kennesaw State University, and I am pursuing a career in conservation research. I previously completed a study abroad program in Belize and am excited to be back once again as an intern! I am excited to learn more about the reef ecosystem here at To***co Caye Marine Station! 🌊🐳🐢🩵

There is a new addition to the Marine Station! 🎨🖌️

“On the second day of my internship, I saw my new co-worker, Ally, face a 12ft Hammerhead shark face on. It became a frequent tale we tell around the station, so I became inspired to make it part of the stations history. That’s when Aysha gave me the task of updating the welcome board. Around the information, I added animals I see frequently around To***co Caye while I learn more about the unique ecosystem here. The frigate birds we feed after lionfish dissections, the spotted eagle ray that swims around Reefs End at sunset, the mom and baby manatee I saw on my way to To***co Caye, and Cookies, the local volleyball legend. I feel lucky to be apart of To***co Caye’s community, on land and in the sea.” 💫

May was a month of science, collaboration, and community action at To***co Caye Marine Station. 🌊

We were pleased to welcome students from the University of North Georgia and Kennesaw State University, who participated in a variety of marine science and conservation activities throughout their stay. Kennesaw State students also carried out independent research projects focused on zooplankton and microplastic sampling and seagrass surveys, gaining valuable field experience while collecting data for their ongoing studies.

This month also marked a special milestone as we hosted our first local college group, Ecumenical Junior College, through a partnership with Sea of Life. During their visit, students participated in a coastal cleanup and conducted a TrashBlitz audit, gaining hands-on experience in marine debris monitoring while collecting data on the types and sources of waste found within the area.

Beyond the station, TCMS was invited to participate in Sea of Life’s Plastic Solutions Community Workshop in Dangriga. The workshop brought together community members and stakeholders to identify areas experiencing significant waste accumulation, discuss illegal dumping concerns, and explore practical solutions such as improved waste bin placement and increased collaboration to address local pollution challenges.

We extend our sincere thanks to the University of North Georgia, Kennesaw State University, Ecumenical Junior College, and Sea of Life for helping make May a month filled with research, environmental stewardship, and meaningful community collaboration. 💙♻️🐠

“Hi! I am Arianna Flota, and I am so excited to join the To***co Caye Marine Station as an intern for the month. I am from San Pedro, and moved to the states after my late childhood. My passion for Belize’s ecosystem led me to attend Kenyon College where I major in Environmental Studies, and I am pursuing a career in marine research and protection. I am excited to be back in my home county contributing my skills in coral health and restoration to the protect our beautiful ecosystem. I am also lucky to learn from Aysha and Ally about the unique ecosystem of To***co Caye.” 🪸🐠🦀

April at To***co Caye Marine Station may have been a quieter month in terms of group numbers, but it was still filled with meaningful impact, environmental education, and community engagement. 🌎🌊

This month, we welcomed groups from Bishop O’Dowd and Education First (EF), who participated in reef cleanups, lionfish dissections, CoralWatch monitoring, and snorkeling while learning more about Belize’s marine ecosystems and the importance of protecting them. 💙🐠

One of the highlights of the month was celebrating Earth Day! 🌱✨ Throughout the day, both adults and children participated in creating environmental awareness signs through painting activities that encouraged creativity, conservation, and community involvement. Later that afternoon, we hosted a seagrass cleanup where over 100 lbs of trash was collected from the surrounding environment. After the cleanup, the debris was sorted, weighed, and recorded as part of our ongoing marine pollution data collection efforts. ♻️🪸

Additionally, TCMS was honored to be invited to Ecumenical Junior College for the official introduction of their new refillable water bottle station, made possible through one of our collaborators, Sea of Life. Initiatives like these continue to promote sustainable practices and reduce single-use plastic waste within our communities. 💧🌿

Thank you again to everyone who visited, collaborated, and supported our work throughout April. Every cleanup, conversation, and educational activity helps contribute to the protection of Belize’s marine environments. 🇧🇿✨

March at TCMS was filled with conservation, education, and hands-on marine science experiences. 🌊🪸♻️

Throughout the month, we had the opportunity to work with several visiting groups through environmental education, reef activities, and conservation efforts around To***co Caye and the surrounding reef systems. From CoralWatch monitoring and lionfish dissections to island tours and reef cleanups, each activity was designed to help participants better understand the importance of protecting Belize’s marine ecosystems. 🇧🇿💙

During our CoralWatch activities, students learned about coral health, coral bleaching, and the environmental stressors affecting reefs before conducting their own reef assessments in the water using CoralWatch color charts. 🪸📊

We also carried out lionfish dissections, where students explored the anatomy and ecological impacts of this invasive species while learning about ongoing management efforts within Belize. 🐟🔬

Environmental education remained a major focus throughout the month as we delivered talks on coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass ecosystems, marine pollution, climate change, and sustainable conservation practices during our tours and activities. 🌿

This month also included several reef and island cleanups, a visit to the Smithsonian Institution on Carrie Bow Caye, and attendance at Reef Week. 💙

What’s Happening?
🖌️ Morning Session: Sign Painting for Kids! Let your creativity shine as we paint ocean-themed signs with powerful messages about protecting our reefs and environment. (All materials provided!)
♻️ Afternoon Session: Join our volunteer-based Reef & Seagrass Snorkel Cleanup! Help remove marine debris to protect the ecosystems that sustain Belize’s marine life.

🥤 Refreshments will be provided!

What to Bring:
✅ Reusable water bottle
✅ Snorkeling gear
✅ Sun protection gear (hats, rashguards, buffs, sunglasses).
❌ IMPORTANT: NO SUNSCREEN! (to protect our delicate coral reefs, please do not bring sunscreen).
