📚🧮 8th Annual Mathematics Symposium at the University of Belize! 🎉🎓

On April 10th, we had an incredible day of learning and discussion at the 8th Annual Mathematics Symposium held in the Jaguar Auditorium at the University of Belize, Belmopan campus. The Faculty of Science and Technology hosted the symposium through its Department of Mathematics, Physics, and IT in conjunction with the University of Belize Mathematics Club. The event was titled “Mathematics – Empowering Minds, Enriching Lives” and targeted secondary and tertiary-level students and faculty. 🏫

The objectives of the symposium were to raise awareness of the importance and applications of Mathematics in everyday life, emphasize the importance of Mathematics as a stepping stone to many other disciplines, highlight current Mathematical research being done in Belize and elsewhere, and inspire faculty, students, and the general community to engage in mathematics-related research/careers. 📈🔍

We had nine dynamic presenters who shared their knowledge on various topics ranging from “Coaching and Mentoring for Underrepresented Undergraduate Students in STEM” to “Approximating the Magnetic Field in a Steady State Model for Magnetohydrodynamics”. The presentations were all very engaging and informative. 🎤👏

A big thank you to all the speakers, attendees, and organizers who made this event successful! Special thanks to all administrators, faculty, staff, UB students, parents, and participating High school and sixth form teachers, students, and other guests who attended in person or logged on to the Zoom platform. Without an audience, we could not have a Symposium. 🙏

🌊Scientists across the world have predicted a strong El Niño event in 2023. El Niño is the warm phase of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and is characterized by a band of warm ocean water that develops in the central and east-central equatorial Pacific. ICTP climate scientists Fred Kucharski and Adnan Abid discuss the history of El Niño observations and its causes.
