Belize Barrier Reef Watch goal is to engage stakeholders to help identify resilient reefs, hope spots & migratory routes for endangered megafauna!

Regular reports from citizen scientists - divers and snorkelers - are the foundation of the Coral Watch program. The reports summarize levels of coral bleaching so that changes can be monitored during coral bleaching events, and to identify resilient reefs, those reefs that may bleach, but recover quickly.

Today, on World Oceans Day we mark an especially meaningful milestone as we proudly recognize the organizations who have stepped forward as the very first members of the ECO Ambassador Program.

On this global day of awareness, we are reminded of the vital importance of protecting our oceans, which sustain life, support livelihoods, and safeguard the incredible biodiversity of Belize’s marine ecosystems and barrier reef. From coral reefs to coastal habitats, healthy oceans are essential to sustainability and the future of our planet.

As Founding Members, these businesses are demonstrating that environmental stewardship and sustainable business practices go hand in hand. Their commitment strengthens our shared mission to protect Belize’s natural resources while inspiring meaningful action across the private sector.

We are honored to welcome them into the ECO Ambassador family and extend our deepest gratitude for their leadership, vision, and dedication to a more sustainable future.

Join us in celebrating our Founding Members and their commitment to making a lasting difference by protecting the resources that connect us all.

The Belize Barrier Reef Watch database features reports submitted by citizen scientists, encompassing a variety of marine life, including marine mammals, sea turtles, pillar corals, and stranded marine organisms, along with other categories emphasized by the program. These reports are instrumental in identifying resilient reefs, migratory pathways, and critical habitats for endangered species. We are thrilled to announce that our initial outreach for the Eco Ambassador program was met with enthusiasm. Many businesses shared their feedback, stating that the program inspired them to think of innovative ways to enhance their sustainability efforts, and they expressed a desire to engage with their staff, visitors, and community.
We are excited to see the positive impact this program is having on local enterprises. The Eco Ambassador program aims to foster a collaborative spirit, encouraging participants to adopt environmentally friendly practices that benefit both their operations and the broader ecosystem. We believe that by working together, we can create a more sustainable future for all.
In light of recent environmental challenges, such as the impact of sargassum on our shores and the effects of climate change on our reefs, the importance of such initiatives is even more pronounced. Our program not only aims to raise awareness but also to empower communities with the knowledge and tools they need to make a difference.
We invite more businesses and individuals to join us in this endeavor, as every small action contributes to a larger positive change for our planet.

Citizen science reports play an important role in conservation by generating data that can support research, monitoring, and informed management decisions. Through long-term environmental monitoring and awareness, these reports align with SDG 13: Climate Action. They also support the conservation of marine biodiversity, aligning with SDG 14: Life Below Water.

Today, we gladly feature two observations of mating sea turtles submitted through the Belize Barrier Reef Watch Program. Sightings like these provide valuable information on species behavior, distribution, and critical habitats, helping to build a better understanding of the wildlife that depends on the Belize Barrier Reef.

Thank you to marine guide, Raheem Staine and fisher, Hector Martinez , who have participated in the Belize Barrier Reef Watch consistently and continue to raise awareness among their peers.

Our outreach in Ambergris Caye gave us the opportunity to connect with hotels and tour operators committed to sustainability in their everyday operations. It was inspiring to see businesses of all sizes taking meaningful steps to protect Belize’s natural resources and support responsible tourism.

Island Divers Belize Dive Shop offers Reef safe sunscreen which protects the corals and marine life from harmful chemicals that can cause bleaching and damage to these delicate ecosystems. Traditional sunscreens often contain ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which have been shown to contribute to coral stress and deterioration.

These actions contribute to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth: supporting sustainable tourism and local entrepreneurship through the promotion of Belizean-made products and environmentally responsible services.

SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production: promoting environmentally responsible products and encouraging sustainable business practices within the tourism sector.

SDG 14 – Life Below Water: protecting coral reefs and marine ecosystems by reducing pollutants that can harm Belize’s marine biodiversity.

By choosing reef-safe options, visitors and beachgoers can enjoy the sun responsibly, ensuring that the vibrant underwater world remains healthy and thriving for future generations. Additionally, these eco-friendly sunscreens are often made with natural ingredients that are gentle on the skin, offering a win-win for both humans and the environment. Purchasing locally made Reef safe products also means you’ll be supporting the Belizean economy!

Observations from Our Outreach in Hopkins and Placencia!

During our outreach, we were pleased to see numerous sustainable practices already in place within local businesses. Here we highlight a water purfication system installed at Parrot Cove Lodge. The water purification system plays a crucial role in fostering a healthier and more sustainable future by contributing to key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:
Goal 3 — Enhancing the health and well-being of guests, staff, and the community
Goal 6 — Ensuring access to cleaner, safer water
Goal 12 — Responsible consumption and production by minimizing plastic waste
Goal 13 — Encouraging more sustainable and environmentally responsible operations

The ECO Ambassador Program aims to highlight these and other sustainable initiatives, inspiring a united movement toward a more sustainable Belize!
