⚕ Pharmacy vessels⚕
🔺 Our today’s article is about pharmacy vessels. Both medicine and pharmacy are interdependent and called upon to protect people’s health.
🔺 The specificity of pharmacy activity implies the presence of numerous utensils for the manufacture, storage and dispensing of medicines. Pharmacy vessels could be divided into display, laboratory and containers. The exposition of our museum contains laboratory mortars and pestles.
🔺 The history of the manufacture of pharmaceutical vessels has come a long way from clay, approximately IV-III millennium BC, to modern glass samples. By the way, a mortar and pestle made of stone are considered one of the oldest tools for grinding grain, known as far back as 8000 BC. And today, the image of the mortar and pestle is a very recognizable international symbol of pharmacy.
🔺 Since ancient times, the mortar and pestle were indispensable attributes of alchemists, it was with their help that pharmacists of antiquity made medicinal powders and pastes. In the Middle Ages, images of a mortar and pestle were placed on signs installed above the entrance to pharmacies. Thanks to this sign, illiterate citizens and travelers from other countries could accurately find a shop with medicines. Gradually, these symbols began to be placed on their coats of arms by universities that train pharmacists.
