MRT ENGAGES INDUSTRY TO STRENGTHEN HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

Industry engagement is essential in the development of relevant and future-ready education. By listening to industry and working closely with key stakeholders, we gain valuable insights that help strengthen our programmes and ensure our graduates are equipped to meet the evolving demands of healthcare.

Recently, the Medical Records & Transcription (MRT) Department, under the School of Leadership & Management, brought together representatives from DPSM, HRDC, the Ministry of Health, government and private healthcare facilities for a stakeholder engagement workshop focused on the future of MRT education.

The engagement provided an important platform for stakeholders to exchange perspectives and contribute to the development of MRT education. Discussions included the proposed review of the MRT Diploma programme from three years to two years, the development of a Bachelor’s Degree in MRT, and the rollout of the MRT–Medical Billing & Coding five-day short course, covering medical terminology in disease coding, medical billing and health insurance.

A key focus of the engagement was ensuring that MRT graduates obtain the five core competency domains required in modern health information management: organising, maintaining and securing physical and digital patient information; mastery of anatomy, physiology, disease processes and pharmacology terms; converting medical dictations into accurate, formatted clinical reports; assigning standardised codes to diagnoses and medical procedures for billing purposes; and navigating and updating digital health records management systems.

Moving forward, continued collaboration with industry stakeholders will help ensure that MRT education remains responsive to workforce needs and grounded in the realities of healthcare today, while preparing graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to the future of health information management.

This September, Boitekanelo College joins the world in commemorating Su***de Awareness and Prevention Month under the theme, “You Matter. You Are Not Alone. Start the Conversation.”

Su***de prevention and awareness is a conversation that concerns all of us. Whether you are going through a difficult time, supporting someone who is, or simply learning how to recognise when someone may need help, your voice, compassion and willingness to listen can make a difference.

Throughout the month, we will be creating spaces for awareness, connection and support through su***de prevention education, screening, a Messages of Hope Wall and free counselling services.

Let’s check in on one another. Let’s listen without judgement. Let’s make it easier to ask for help and remind one another that we matter, and none of us has to walk through difficult moments alone. 💙

We are proud to announce that Dr. Gabalape A. Sejie, Deputy Provost Academic Services, will be speaking at the 18th World Congress on Public Health.

Dr. Sejie will present Botswana-led research on HIV testing, measles vaccination, and flood disaster resilience. His studies explore what helps or hinders people from accessing essential health services and how communities can better prepare for health threats.

This is a valuable opportunity to share local evidence on a global stage and strengthen population health resilience. We wish him well on this engagement.

BC CONTINUES TO ENHANCE LEARNER WELLBEING AT KAGISO SENIOR

A conducive learning environment extends beyond classrooms, teaching staff and learning materials. It is also shaped by the conditions in which learners live, rest and prepare for each school day.

Where resources are limited, ensuring that young people have the conditions they need to thrive cannot rest with schools alone. We each have a role to play.

It is in this spirit of shared responsibility that Boitekanelo College continues to walk alongside Kagiso Senior School, providing resources and support where we can make a meaningful difference.

On Monday, we provided 100 mattresses for boarding learners who had been using old and soiled mattresses, while others had been without mattresses altogether. The new mattresses will provide a cleaner, more comfortable place to rest and restore a sense of dignity to their living environment.

The initiative forms part of our ongoing partnership with Kagiso Senior School, through which Boitekanelo College has invested more than half a million P**a over the past two years in support initiatives, including IT support, staff development, learner recognition, prize-giving contributions and printing services.

Our Deputy Provost People and Operations, Ms Neo Raboenyana, reaffirmed that Boitekanelo’s mission of Changing Lives extends beyond healthcare education. It is also about contributing to the communities in which we operate and creating meaningful impact beyond our campuses.

Kagiso Senior Deputy School Head, Ms Kamogelo Puskas, expressed appreciation for the continued support, noting the difference the new mattresses will make for boarding learners and recognising the College’s sustained investment in learner-focused and staff development initiatives.

This initiative reflects our commitment to Changing Lives by creating tangible community impact and helping young people learn, develop and realise their potential.

Paballo Obena joined De Beers in January 2026 and is gaining valuable industry experience within the Safety and Sustainability Development section. As an Occupational Health and Safety student at Boitekanelo College, she is applying her knowledge to real-world SHE operations, including safety inspections, risk assessments and incident management. Her experience has given her a deeper appreciation of how safety is embedded in the organisation’s culture, while teaching her that even the smallest contributions can make a meaningful difference.

Paballo’s journey reflects the importance of practical exposure in building confidence, adaptability and the skills needed to contribute in a professional environment.
