๐ฃ๐ Learning History Where It Happened!
Our Standard 7 learners from Maranatha Academy of Excellence Primary School embarked on an educational tour to the ๐๐๐ญ๐ฌ๐ข๐๐ง๐ ๐
๐จ๐จ๐ญ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ, where they explored one of Botswana's most fascinating historical and cultural heritage sites.
During the visit, learners discovered that while the Story of Matsieng is a well-known traditional narrative that many believe to be true, the footprints themselves are petroglyphs ; symbolic images or carvings etched directly into rock surfaces. These carvings, found on coloured stone, form part of a wider collection of ancient rock art found across Botswana, including in Kanye, Moshana, and Letlhakane.
The learners also learned that these petroglyphs served as more than just markings. Historically, they were believed to signify ownership of an area and held deep spiritual significance within African Traditional Religion, identifying the site as sacred. Because the location has a natural water source, it was also regarded as a place with cleansing powers and was at times used for traditional ceremonies, including rain-making rituals.

Educational tours like these help our learners appreciate Botswana's rich cultural heritage while developing critical thinking by distinguishing between traditional beliefs, oral history, and archaeological evidence.
