The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) outcomes are a powerful reminder that global environmental commitments must translate into real, local action. UNEA-7 focused on addressing the triple planetary crisis climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution .
A Hybrid session was hosted by YEDx Botswana under the Children and Youth Major Group( CYMG) to UNEP in collaboration with UNDP on key resolutions such as sustainable management of minerals and metals, circular economy approaches, sound waste and chemical management, and strengthening nature and community based solutions.
For us at UB-WECS, these outcomes are not abstract ideas they directly connect to the work we do and the realities we face as youth in Botswana. Issues like sustainable mining, waste management, and environmental governance are critical spaces where young people can lead. , promoting recycling and waste reduction initiatives, or raising awareness on ecosystem protection, these resolutions provide a clear roadmap for action.
Youth play a crucial role in localising these global outcomes. We are not just participants, but drivers of change translating policy into practice through community projects, research, innovation, and active engagement in policy dialogue. Platforms like this empower us to contribute to policy recommendations that can influence national development pathways.
The environmental impact of implementing these outcomes is significant: cleaner communities, more sustainable resource use, reduced pollution, stronger climate resilience, and a more inclusive approach to environmental governance.
This experience reinforced one key message the future of environmental sustainability in Botswana will be shaped by how effectively youth turn global commitments into local solutions.
