Did you know that Ganvié in Benin is known as the “Venice of Africa”?

Built on Lake Nokoué, this remarkable stilt village is home to thousands of Tofinu people. Homes, schools, markets and shops are built above the water, with canoes serving as an important means of transportation.

Ganvié began as a place of refuge from slave raids and has grown into a unique, thriving community shaped by life on the water.

Did you know that the name Burkina Faso carries a powerful message about character and identity?

The name was adopted in 1984 under revolutionary leader Thomas Sankara, replacing the country’s former name, Upper Volta. It combines Burkina, from Mòoré, referring to a person who is upright or honorable, and Faso, from Dioula, meaning homeland or fatherland.

Together, Burkina Faso is commonly translated as “Land of the Upright People.” 🇧🇫 The name reflects values of integrity, dignity, courage and national pride, reminding us that even a country’s name can carry a meaningful story.
