Did You Know?
The name Liberia comes from the Latin word liber, meaning "free." Because of this, Liberia is often called the "Land of the Free." The name reflects the country's unique history as a place where formerly enslaved and free Black people from the United States settled in the early 1820s.
Liberia declared its independence on 26 July 1847, making it Africa's oldest modern republic. Its capital city, Monrovia, was named after former U.S. President James Monroe. The country's flag also bears a resemblance to the United States flag, reflecting its historical roots.
Learning about different countries helps us better understand the diverse histories and cultures that shape our world.
