Literacy Awareness Month is a reminder of the vital role teachers play in shaping futures.

At AFreac25, we recognize and celebrate the educators who commit to professional growth, not just for themselves, but for the students whose lives they touch every day.

When teachers are empowered through training, collaboration and support.
Empowered teachers create empowered learners, giving every child, especially those who struggle — the opportunity to thrive.

Here’s to building stronger communities of practice and classrooms where every child discovers the joy of reading. 🧡

September is Literacy Awareness Month ✨ a time to reflect, reimagine and recommit to literacy for all.

AFreac exists to educate and create awareness for educators, parents and policymakers all over the continent. Literacy is not just about decoding words, it’s about opening doors to opportunity, inclusion and lifelong learning.

Across Africa, millions of children face barriers to literacy. But when we support them with structured approaches, patience, love and kindness, we change not only their learning journeys but their entire futures. And If there’s one thing we have learned at this year’s conference, it’s kindness!

Let this month be a reminder: 🌟

- Literacy opens doors.

- Literacy creates opportunity.

- Literacy changes lives.

- Literacy is Access.

A Panel Discussion on Understanding Autism: Strengths, Challenges and Everything In Between

What an eye-opening session this was! 💡 Our panel unpacked the unique strengths that autistic learners bring, the challenges they face in the classroom and society and how we can create spaces that truly include and empower them.

The conversation sparked deeper reflection on how we, as educators, parents and communities, can shift our perspectives, focusing not just on challenges, but on the incredible potential that lies “in between.”

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible panelists for their bravery, honesty and openness, for letting us into their personal lives so that we can better understand autism beyond the labels.

Your stories not only deepened our awareness but also reminded us of the power of empathy, inclusion and appreciation for every learner’s unique journey. 💙

We are grateful for your voices and the light you continue to shine.

🌟 Spotlight on our amazing moderator, Andisa Liba! 🌟

During the panel discussion:
“Language, Access and Equity: What’s Holding Literacy Back in Botswana?”
Andisa brought the conversation to life with her sharp questions and dynamic presence.

She challenged the panel with thought-provoking questions like:
💡 Are our language policies opening doors or closing them?
💡 Who gets left behind when access isn’t equitable?
💡 What bold steps can we take to truly unlock literacy for all?

Her ability to keep the panelists engaged and the audience thinking made this one of the most powerful sessions of the conference. 👏👏

Panel Discussion: Unseen Struggles, Unspoken Strengths – A Parent’s Journey Through Reading Challenges

This deeply moving panel gave voice to the often-silent experiences of parents supporting children with reading difficulties. These parent' stories revealed the emotional weight, the resilience and the quiet strength it takes to advocate for their children even when the system and the society doesn't always understand.

From frustration to breakthroughs, this session reminded us that behind every struggling learner is a parent who’s fighting silently, patiently and powerfully.

To all parents walking this journey, we see you, we hear you and we honour your strength. 💛

🎙️ Guest Presentation by Justina Asafu-Adjaye
On Building Inclusive Education Systems: From Policy to Practice

Justina Asafu-Adjaye delivered a compelling presentation that bridged the gap between policy intentions and real-world classroom practice. Her insights challenged us to rethink how inclusive education is implemented, reminding us that true inclusion goes beyond access and requires systems that support every learner meaningfully.

Her session was a timely reminder that change begins when policy meets compassion, planning and persistence.

Thank you, Justina, for pushing the conversation forward! 💡📚

Panel Discussion: “What I Wish My Teachers Knew” — A Student Panel

This heartfelt session brought together a group of students who shared raw, honest insights about their experiences in the classroom. Through their voices, we were reminded of the real impact of teaching — not just on learning, but on lives.

One moment that deeply resonated was when the panel was asked:
“If you could give one piece of advice to all your teachers, what would it be?”
Their answer was simple, yet powerful:
“We wish teachers could be kind to us.”

Let that sit with us. As we work to support students who learn differently, may kindness always lead the way. 💛

We were honoured to Learn from Dr Sophie Moagi Legato Centre for Psychometric Assessment

Dr Sophie delivered and engaging and powerful session titled: Unpacking Assessment Reports: Demystifying Screening and Assessments.

An eye opening and very packed presentation which took a deep dive into how we understand and interpret Assessment Reports. A crucial tool in supporting students who learn differently.

Dr Sophie didn't just talk theory, she brought real sample reports, making the session practical.
