HOW PILIKWE WAS FOUNDED!
75 years ago, multitudes of Bangwato men gathered at the main kgota in Serowe to discuss the marriage of the heir apparent, Seretse Khama (later knighted) to Ruth Williams, a British woman. The Bangwato morafe split into two factions and there was a bitter feud between the two revered leaders that ended with Kgosi Tshekedi Khama, the then regent choosing to leave Gammangwato with his family to seek refuge in Kweneng. Kgosi Tshekedi also left with some of his uncles namely Gorewang Kgamane and his son Rasebolai, Gasebalwe Seretse, Rakoosha Seropola and Badirwang Sekgoma. Please not by then Badirwang was the only surviving son of Kgosi Sekgoma I. Tshekedi was also accompanied by 45 headmen who were often referred to as the cream of the crop of the Bangwato society.
