🗳️ National Voters’ Day Observed at Trongsa College
The Dzongkhag Election Sector , Trongsa, in collaboration with the Democracy Club of Trongsa College, observed National Voters’ Day 2026 at Trongsa College today, bringing together members of the college community, local leaders, educators, and community representatives to celebrate the spirit of democratic participation.
The programme began with the reading of the Voters’ Pledge, followed by the reading of the message from the Chief Election Commissioner of Bhutan. Adding a youthful perspective to the occasion, first-year students shared their experiences of participating in and organising elections for the first time. The programme also featured a panel discussion moderated by student members of the College Democracy Club, creating a space for young people to reflect on the meaning of voting, participation, and democratic responsibility.
The day took on a particularly moving turn when College President Ugyen Dorji shared his personal story of his own journey with democracy.
The President recalled being a young high school student in a remote village in eastern Bhutan when the historic announcement of democracy was made. Far from the centres of power and public life, he listened to the announcement on the radio, a simple moment that, in retrospect, would become the beginning of a remarkable personal journey.
Years later, he stepped into that democratic journey himself, contesting a local government election which he lost. And then came 2018, in Bhutan’s third round of parliamentary elections, the boy who had once listened to the announcement of democracy on a radio in a remote village had risen to become a Cabinet Minister. Looking back on that extraordinary journey, he reflected that such a transformation would not have been possible without the opportunities created by democracy. The President spoke candidly of his passion for political participation, saying that even losing elections did not hurt him; a message that encouraged young students to find their voices and take part in shaping Bhutan’s democratic future.
