Introduction

The Faculty of Traditional Medicine (FTM) was established in 1971 as an Indigenous Training Centre at Dechencholing, Thimphu. As per the Resolution of the 32nd National Assembly, 8 students were recruited to undergo 3 years sMenpa training (diploma). 3rd National Sorig Conference – Day 02

The second day of the conference featured insightful discussions and research presentations under the following sub-themes:
• Innovation in Sowa Rigpa Education
• Accessibility of Sowa Rigpa Knowledge Beyond Bhutan
• Ancient Secrets of Sowa Rigpa for Wellbeing

Experts and researchers emphasized the importance of integrating modern technology, student-centered learning, and evidence-based approaches into Sowa Rigpa education while preserving its traditional wisdom and values.

The research presentations explored the effectiveness of traditional therapies in managing pain, stress, and chronic conditions; the sustainability challenges surrounding endangered medicinal resources; public perceptions and utilization of Traditional Medicine services; and the growing role of mindfulness, acupuncture, pulse-based diagnosis, and spiritual healing practices within Bhutan’s healthcare system.

The sessions also highlighted the global relevance of Sowa Rigpa in promoting holistic wellbeing, cultural preservation, and sustainable healthcare for the future.

The day concluded with a valedictory programme, during which Mr. Monu Tamang, Physiotherapist at CRRH, received the Best Presenter Award. Drg. Deki Lhamo from Tsirang District Hospital secured the 1st Runner-Up Award, while Mrs. Dorji Choden, a fourth-year degree student, received the 2nd Runner-Up Award. The faculty congratulated all the winners and participants for their active participation, dedication and valuable contributions to the conference.

The 3rd National Sorig Conference commenced today, 15 May 2026, under the theme “Research, Innovation and Evidence-Based Practice in Sowa Rigpa.”

The conference was graced by the Hon’ble Health Minister Lyonpo Tandin Wangchuk and brought together scholars, researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders from across the country to strengthen and advance evidence-based traditional medicine in Bhutan.

Key highlights of the day included the inauguration of Bhutan Sorig Journal Volume 3, Issue 1 and Sorig Zingtig, keynote addresses on the topic (Sowa Rigpa Rang gi nang gi norbu)emphasizing the importance of research and the integration of Sowa Rigpa into modern healthcare systems, as well as insightful panel discussions on multidisciplinary research collaboration.

Research presentations showcased promising findings on acupuncture as a non-surgical approach for symptomatic lipoma, traditional herbal management of chronic constipation, and venesection therapy for chronic sinusitis associated with nasal polyps.

The conference reaffirmed the commitment of the Faculty towards advancing research, innovation, collaboration, and the preservation of Bhutan’s rich Sowa Rigpa heritage for future generations.

The second day of the conference will focus on the subthemes: Innovation in Sowa Rigpa Education, Accessibility of Sowa Rigpa Beyond Bhutan, and Ancient Secret of Sowa Rigpa for Wellbeing. The sessions will be streamed live on our page.
