The Vice Chancellor of the Royal University of Bhutan today met and interacted with the staff and students of the Trongsa College of Heritage and Contemporary Studies (TCHCS).

As the first cohort enrolled in the College’s five newly launched programmes, and with no senior students on campus, the students are in a unique position. They have not only an opportunity, but also a profound responsibility, to help shape the academic culture and character of the College from its very beginning.

He encouraged them to set the right example for those who will come after them, reminding them that if they do this well, their legacy will remain at the College for years to come.

As the first cohort of a new chapter in the College’s history, their choices and actions will help establish the culture that future generations will inherit.

The Vice Chancellor also sensitised the students on the RUB Drug Policy and the revised RUB Student Code of Conduct, which adopts a zero-tolerance approach towards drug and alcohol abuse.

The interaction comes at an important moment for TCHS as it begins a new chapter, with the first cohort of 125 students now entrusted with the opportunity to help build a strong culture of academic excellence, integrity and positive student life for generations to come.

The Vice Chancellor was at the College to attend the meetings of the Academic Board and Executive Forum which took place from 8-11 September 2026.

𝗥𝗨𝗕 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗝𝗶𝗴𝗺𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗴𝘆𝗲𝗹 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲

The Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) appointed Tashi Wangmo as the new President of Jigme Namgyel Engineering College (JNEC) at a simple ceremony held at the Office of the Vice Chancellor today.

Her appointment comes at an important juncture for JNEC and the University, as Bhutan’s ongoing national transformation creates an increasing demand for highly competent technical professionals. An engineer by training with extensive experience in public leadership, governance and policy, she brings a combination of technical understanding and leadership experience that will be valuable as JNEC strengthens the quality and relevance of its programmes, deepens engagement with industry, and advances the international accreditation of its programmes

Tashi Wangmo previously served as an Eminent Member of the National Council of Bhutan from 2008 to 2021 and subsequently as Secretary of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Employment (MoICE) from 2021 to 2026. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wollongong, Australia, and a Master’s degree in Public Policy from the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies, Japan.

The University looks forward to her leadership in further strengthening JNEC’s academic excellence, industry engagement, research and innovation, and in preparing graduates with the knowledge, skills and values needed to contribute meaningfully to national development and to the ongoing transformation envisioned by His Majesty The King.

The Vice Chancellor of the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) visited Universitas Indonesia (University of Indonesia) on 3 September and Universitas Negeri Jakarta (State University of Jakarta) on 4 September 2026 as part of RUB’s continuing efforts to strengthen its academic and research partnerships in the region.

During the visits, the Vice Chancellor met with senior university leaders and faculty members and discussed opportunities for collaboration in areas of mutual interest. These included sustainable development, environment and climate studies, social and natural sciences, and education, as well as opportunities for joint research and academic exchanges.

The engagements provided an opportunity to explore how the complementary strengths of RUB and the two Indonesian universities could be leveraged to create meaningful opportunities for students, faculty and researchers. The visits also form part of RUB’s broader internationalisation efforts to build strategic partnerships with universities across the region and strengthen its contribution to addressing shared national and global challenges.

The Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) and Keio University, Japan, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today in Bandung, Indonesia, during the 30th Anniversary Conference of Keio University’s School on Internet (SOI). The MoU was signed by RUB Vice Chancellor Chewang Rinzin and Keio University President Dr. Kohei Itoh.

The agreement seeks to strengthen academic and research collaboration between the two universities and create opportunities for students and faculty through exchanges, collaborative research and other academic initiatives. It also seeks to deepen RUB’s engagement with and benefit from its membership in the SOI network.

During the Conference, the RUB Vice Chancellor also participated in a panel discussion on “AI and Higher Education” alongside the President of Keio University and the Rector of Bandung Institute of Technology. He emphasised the need for universities and educators to rethink education in response to rapidly evolving AI while remaining firmly anchored in the fundamental purpose of education.

The Vice Chancellor stressed that while universities must equip students with the knowledge and technical capabilities to thrive in an AI-enabled world, they must be equally intentional about nurturing enlightened human beings with strong values, sound judgement and a sense of responsibility. He also underscored the importance of ensuring that AI enhances rather than diminishes the rigour, depth and human dimensions of learning.

The Vice Chancellor of the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) met with Dr. A. Rikrik Kusmara, Vice Rector of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), and senior officials of the University today in Bandung, Indonesia, to discuss potential collaboration between the two institutions.

Both sides expressed keen interest in exploring partnerships in areas including student and faculty exchanges, study-abroad programmes, joint research projects, and other areas of mutual interest. ITB is one of Indonesia’s leading public research universities, with a strong reputation in science, technology, engineering and related fields.

The Vice Chancellor is currently in Indonesia to attend the 61st Meeting and 30th Anniversary Conference of the School on Internet (SOI) of Keio University, hosted by ITB. The engagement reflects RUB’s continuing efforts to expand its global partnerships and create meaningful international opportunities for its students, faculty and researchers.

The Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) and SD Edu Pte Ltd signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today to collaborate on attracting international students to RUB colleges and programmes. The partnership marks an important step in RUB’s internationalisation journey and is its first collaboration with a Bhutanese organisation specifically focused on international student recruitment.

Through the partnership, RUB and SD Edu Pte Ltd will work together to promote Bhutan as an attractive destination for quality higher education, drawing on the country’s reputation for peace and stability, its English-medium education system, and its distinctive cultural and natural heritage. The collaboration also brings together RUB’s academic offerings with the partner’s understanding of the Bhutanese context, international networks and market knowledge.

The initiative has significance beyond the University. At a time when Bhutan has traditionally seen a strong outward flow of students for higher education, attracting international students can contribute to a more vibrant and diverse higher education ecosystem, create economic opportunities, and enable Bhutanese students to learn alongside peers from different cultures and backgrounds.

The partnership reflects RUB’s broader aspiration to become a more globally connected university while contributing to Bhutan’s emergence as a distinctive destination for international education

𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱

The Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) held an Appointment Ceremony for the new Presidents of three of its constituent colleges today at the Office of the Vice Chancellor. Dr. Sonam Tashi was appointed President of the College of Natural Resources, Dr. Phuntsho Wangdi as President of Paro College of Education (PCE), and Mr. Kuenzang Gyeltshen as President of Sherubtse College. The three Presidents were appointed following an open and competitive selection process conducted recently by the University.

Addressing the newly appointed Presidents, the Vice Chancellor congratulated them and highlighted the weight of responsibility that comes with leadership, alongside the excitement of serving the University and bringing positive change. He emphasised the importance of balancing current priorities with RUB’s long-term goals, while aligning new ideas and initiatives with His Majesty's vision and the national transformation objectives.

In their acceptance addresses, the newly appointed Presidents pledged their commitment to serving their respective colleges with humility and dedication, and to contribute meaningfully to the University and the nation at large.
