The Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck Super Fab Lab turns four this year, marking its anniversary on the auspicious Birth Anniversary of Her Majesty, The Gyaltsuen.
This year, the lab handed over the Asian Development Bank -funded Assistive Technology Project to the Ministry of Education and Skills Development Sherig Bhutan. Built and prototyped within Bhutan, the project delivers locally crafted tactile learning aids and customised devices designed to support children with diverse learning needs in classrooms across the country. That these tools were designed and made here is as significant as the tools themselves.
The DHI InnoTech Department also finalised a Memorandum of Agreement for the RiKhaNET project with WWF Bhutan and the Department of Forests and Park Services, establishing Bhutan's first data-driven conservation technology platform for smart wildlife monitoring and safer communities.
Four years of prototyping, building, and scaling solutions that are made in Bhutan, for Bhutan. Here is to what comes next.

DHI, through the Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck Super Fab Lab, has launched an extension of the satellite lab at the Start-Up Centre, located near the CSI Market in Changzamtok, Thimphu. This initiative aims to bring advanced fabrication resources directly to the community and local innovators.
The space was officially inaugurated by H.E. Mr. Sandeep Arya, Ambassador of India to Bhutan, and Lyonpo Namgyal Dorji, Minister for the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Employment (MoICE).
This new space is thoughtfully designed to make innovation more accessible to students, entrepreneurs, start-ups, and community members. By providing essential tools and collaborative workspaces, the lab empowers individuals to experiment, prototype, and turn their concepts into practical solutions.
Beyond acting as a workspace, the satellite lab serves as a vital bridge connecting the Start-Up Centre with the main Super Fab Lab. This seamless integration facilitates valuable resource sharing, knowledge exchange, and collaboration, which will help strengthen the local entrepreneurial ecosystem.
The extended lab will also function as a welcoming hub for engagement and learning. By hosting workshops, training programs, and innovation-focused events, the facility is set to encourage community participation and foster a culture of creativity and hands-on experimentation.
Through this initiative, DHI reaffirms its commitment to empowering local innovators, supporting entrepreneurs, and building an inclusive environment where great ideas can connect, grow, and thrive.
