Official Inauguration of STAR-C - 20th October 2025
The College of Science and Technology is honoured to inaugurate the Solar Technology Application Resource Centre (STAR-C) — a hub for solar energy education, training and innovation.
With sincere thanks to the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (MoENR) for their support in making STAR-C a reality.
STAR-C will drive capacity building, product testing and certification, innovation, and solar entrepreneurship, supporting Bhutan’s goal of achieving 5,000 MW of renewable energy by 2040.
The next steps include the rollout of Training of Trainers for faculty and the development of certification courses for technicians, professionals and policy makers & bankers, in close collaboration with ISA and MoENR.

Industrial Tour Report (28th September – 1st October 2025)
Students of the 3rd Year Electrical Engineering Department successfully completed their industrial tour, visiting six key sites and gaining valuable hands-on exposure to real-world electrical systems and power operations.

Semtokha Substation:
Students observed power system operations, including transformers, circuit breakers, and distribution processes, linking theory with practice.

Punatsangchu-II (Powerhouse & Dam):
The visits provided insights into hydroelectric generation—from turbines and generators to dam structures, water flow control, and energy conversion—highlighting sustainable power development.

Wind Farm, Rubesa:
Students explored wind and solar PV systems, gaining knowledge of feeder line integration, transformer applications, and SCADA systems in renewable energy.

CMTD, Begana:
The team learned about transformer maintenance, oil testing, diagnostics, and condition-based maintenance practices.

Bhutan Power System Operator:
The visit enhanced understanding of real-time grid operations, system reliability, and power import-export management.

Bhutan Automation:
Students observed control and protection systems, panel design, and testing procedures essential for reliable and efficient power automation.

Overall, the tour provided practical exposure complementing academic learning and deepened students’ understanding of Bhutan’s electrical power infrastructure.

🌿 Awareness Program on Renewable Energy Technologies 🌿
📅 Date: September 6–7, 2025
📍 College of Science and Technology (CST)

The Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department and the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Development (CRSED) successfully conducted a two-day Awareness Program on Renewable Energy Technologies for the students of Chumithang Middle Secondary School on September 6–7, 2025.

The program aimed to:
⚡ Introduce students to the basics of electricity and renewable energy sources
🌱 Promote energy-efficient practices and sustainable lifestyles
🔬 Inspire interest in STEM education
🦺 Enhance safety awareness through PPE and fire safety demonstrations
☀️ Provide hands-on exposure to solar technologies, e-mobility solutions, and CST’s renewable energy initiatives

✨ Program Highlights:
✅ Interactive sessions on electricity and renewable energy
✅ Demonstrations of PV modules, solar-powered e-vehicle prototypes, e-bikes, and e-bicycles
✅ Visits to CST’s FABLAB, STAR-C, Renewable Energy Labs, and Sustainable Kitchen Systems
✅ Practical safety demonstrations on PPE and fire safety

The students shared that the program broadened their knowledge of renewable energy technologies and motivated them to explore STEM opportunities in the future.

Awareness Training on Electrical Safety and Quality Assurance in Electrical Installations.
With electrical hazards such as short circuits posing growing risks, the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department, in collaboration with the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Development, organized a two-day training on Electrical Safety and Quality Assurance in Electrical Installations from August 30–31, 2025. Funded by the Asian Development Bank project TA-6598 BHU: Preparing Renewable Energy for Climate Resilience, the training brought together first-year students of Electrical, Electronics and Communication, and Instrumentation and Control Engineering.
The programme covered fundamental design principles of electrical installations, compliance with safety regulations, quality assurance practices, fire safety, and occupational health and safety. A key highlight was a hands-on session on first aid and basic life support, delivered by Dr. Sonam Yeshi and his team from Phuentsholing General Hospital and practical demonstration on use of fire extinguisher.
Students shared that the training not only strengthened their understanding of safe electrical practices and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), but also gave them confidence to respond in emergencies through life-saving techniques. The initiative marks an important step toward nurturing safety-conscious engineering professionals prepared for real-world challenges.
The Department sincerely acknowledges all the resource persons and facilitators, particularly Dr. Sonam Yeshi and his team from Phuentsholing General Hospital, for their valuable contributions in making the training impactful and meaningful for the students.

Awareness Training on Solar Energy Technologies
The Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department, in collaboration with the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Development, conducted a two-day Awareness Training on Solar Energy Technologies on 9–10 August 2025 at the College of Science and Technology (CST). The programme, funded by the Asian Development Bank project TA-6598 BHU: Preparing Renewable Energy for Climate Resilience, was attended by first-year students from Information Technology, Architecture, and Software Engineering.
The training introduced students to Bhutan’s energy scenario, the importance of renewable energy, and the working principles of solar photovoltaic and thermal systems. Participants engaged in hands-on experiments with solar PV panels and visited STAR C’s facilities, including hybrid, grid-tied, standalone PV systems, and solar thermal installations.
Participants expressed that the programme provided valuable technical knowledge and practical exposure, enhancing their understanding of renewable energy technologies. They also acknowledged its importance in fostering innovative thinking towards sustainable energy solutions.
The College of Science and Technology warmly thanks the ADB for supporting this initiative. The organising team acknowledges the valuable contributions of resource persons from the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department and the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Development, whose knowledge, passion, and guidance made the sessions both inspiring and impactful for our young learners.

After five intensive days of learning, experimenting, and exploring, the Electrical Engineering Program at the College of Science and Technology proudly concludes the Protection Relay Training in collaboration with industry expert Bhutan Automation.

From mastering the fundamentals of protection systems to hands-on sessions with MiCOM P-Series relays and the OMICRON CMC 356 test kit, participants gained valuable insights into generator, transformer, busbar, and line protection schemes—along with real-world fault analysis and configuration techniques.

🔌 5-Day Hands-On Protection Relay Training at CST ⚡

The Electrical Engineering Program at the College of Science and Technology is proud to host a five-day intensive training module on Protection Relays, in collaboration with industry expert BA. The training commenced yesterday and will continue till Friday, offering a rare opportunity for in-depth, hands-on experience.

The sessions focus on:
✅ Fundamentals of Protection Systems
✅ MiCOM Relay Configuration (P-Series)
✅ OMICRON CMC 356 Test Kit Operation
✅ Generator, Transformer, Busbar, and Line Protection Relays
✅ Practical configuration, testing, and analysis exercises

This training is a vital step toward equipping our students and faculty with real-world skills in relay testing, fault analysis, and power system protection.
