Jakar Higher Secondary School Jakar Higher Secondary School, Bumthang, Bhutan ABOUT THE SCHOOL:

Established in 1961, Jakar Higher Secondary School is one of the oldest schools in Bhutan.

It is located on a beautiful undulating slope opposite to Jakar Dzong one kilometer away by road. And it is two kilometers away from Chamkhar town at a north-west direction. The school occupies an area of 35 acres with Thram number 749. The school takes its name from the nearby Jakar Dzong. Legend has it that Jakar Dzong (which literally translates to ‘White Bird Fortress’) was founded by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal’s great-grandfather Ngagi Wangchuk, who was an eminent Drukpa lama in the 16th century. After he had founded Trongsa dzong, Ngagi Wangchuk came to Bumthang where with the help of donors he started to build a monastery. One day he saw a white bird flying over the construction site towards the ridge where the dzong now stands, and there the bird nested. Ngagi Wangchuk took this to be a good omen and decided to change the location of the monastery. In 1549 the construction was completed and he named it ‘the monastery of the white bird’. In 1961 the school was founded as a Government Secondary School. In 1983 it was upgraded to a Junior High School. In 1995 the Education Department further upgraded this school into a High School. In 2002 it was upgraded to a Higher Secondary School offering Arts and Commerce streams. Science was introduced in 2004. In 2014, the school was among the 19 schools to be granted the autonomous status. As of today the school has classes ranging from IX to XII.

The evening was filled with cheers and applauses. The MPH reverberated with a sense of enjoyment and excitement. The connection between the performers and the audience drew closer.

The DNR band and Drubi Gunner justified and heightened more than audience’s expectations. Hinglayraa Kadrinchey!

Every beat was caught and pronounced eloquently. The success indicators glowed brightly. The purpose was served and intention met. It’s rare opportunity to have them here at our convenience.

There was spontaneous overflow of emotions and this was overwhelming for us.

Lop Jigme Phuntsho, the School Counselor coordinated and executed the program to make all the students emotionally rich.

The program was aimed to refresh the students as the Trial Exam is approaching and prepare them well emotionally. In addition, the artists shared their life experiences which were inspiring and encouraging.

The school administration acknowledges his effort and purpose of the program. The audience’s response explicitly portrayed how excited they were. Our purpose was to make our students lead happy life in a positive environment.

Jakar Higher Secondary School turns 65 years old today as per the record. It is one of the oldest schools, serving the Nation Building process.

Lam Neten of the Jakar Rabdey graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour. Jakarps were blessed to have Venerable Lam Neten in the school for the first time.
Upon the request of the school, Lam Neten bestowed Kago, blessed the school altar and the classrooms.

We saw the release of The Literary Sparks of Jakar HSS, Jakarpoi Shogtshel and Aesthetic booklets.

The differently set learning showcases were presented on the theme: Self Curated Learning.

Under the favourable weather, the programs were well manoeuvred by the emcee Ms Pema Yuden and Mr Khenrab Wangchuk.

The programs appeared spectacular and marvellous. The students if given right platforms at right time with right intentions, they truly unveil their potentials. They actualise their potentials and raise the bars.

Lop Sangay Dorji deserves for all his efforts and dedication for the successful program.

The school administration acknowledges the Spiritual Area Coordinator Lop Kencho Wangmo and her team for planning and ex*****on. In addition all the staff and the students deserve heavy applause for their flawless performance and support.

Above all thank you Kenchosum for the perfect weather today. It was answer to our prayers and blessing indeed!

On every 2nd Learning Showcase, the school has adopted the culture to serve lunch to all the staff and the students. Mentor leads and mentees follow. They enjoy the meal in their togetherness.

This is chiefly conducted to incline the mentor mentee rapport. As such it has positive ripple effects in building their relationships and respects.

Mentor mentee program serves its purpose by counting on them and giving platforms to take care of each other besides giving more reasons to come to school.

May this rapport glow ever brighter to make positive impacts!

Lop Leki, the Disaster Focal Person planned and executed the mock drill well today. All the staff took their assigned roles and responsibilities to make the drill as planned.
Upon the completion of the drill, the school reminded the students of all types of disasters and their responsibilities to be safe all the time.
Such drill in the school prepares all the staff and the students community ready.

As a part of making our students community ready, they took part for a day. As such, the students are connected to the community and learn the community’s culture.

Such attendance has become more important than ever as once our students are out of school, they find difficulty to connect with the community. In addition the rapid developments keep most of them away from it.

Lop Sonam Phuntsho, the Cerebral Area Coordinator coordinated the program. The school administration is appreciative of such leadership.

“𝑨𝑰 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒊𝒍𝒅: 𝑨 𝑵𝒆𝒙𝒕𝑮𝒆𝒏 𝑺𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝑨𝒅𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆”

The Scouts undertook a day hike to 𝑹𝒊𝒈𝒕𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝑮𝒐𝒆𝒏𝒑𝒂 and 𝑩𝒖𝒎𝒑𝒂 𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈 as part of the school’s outdoor and experiential learning activities. The hike provided students with an opportunity to develop physical fitness, teamwork, discipline, responsibility, and an appreciation for Bhutan’s religious and natural heritage.

The first destination was Rigtong Goenpa, a religious and spiritual site where students observed appropriate conduct and reflected on the importance of respecting sacred places and Bhutanese cultural traditions. The hike then continued towards Bumpa Thang, a beautiful natural setting where students enjoyed the scenic surroundings and learned to appreciate the relationship between nature, local history, and culture. Bumthang is widely associated with the traditional interpretation of bumpa (a sacred water vessel) and thang (field or plain), although other interpretations of the name also exist.

Throughout the hike, the Scouts demonstrated teamwork, cooperation, resilience, self-discipline, and care for the environment. They were encouraged to practise responsible outdoor behaviour by keeping the surroundings clean and respecting the natural and religious sites. Overall, the hike was a meaningful and enjoyable learning experience that strengthened the Scouts’ physical, social, cultural, and environmental awareness.

Lop Yeshi Dorji, the Scouts Secretary took the full charge of the hiking to which the school remains grateful to him. To all the staff and the scouts, the school administration is proud of your attendance and conduct. The parents and guardians also have contributed to this hike by approving the children to participate.

The Dzongkhag Education Office has granted the proposal and supported the hike. We remain ever grateful.

Driven by the educational purposes and curriculum demands, the class 12 Commerce led by the Business Domain Head Lop Jambay and PLC teachers, went on an educational field trip under the theme 'Exploring Real-World Enterprise'.

Aimed to connect the classroom lessons in Business & Entrepreneurship, Economics, and Accountancy applied in real life.

Attended to four different businesses and entrepreneurships which truly demonstrated, deepened, broadened and widened the scope of their business models and theories.
