Khandroi Gar Cham
Khandroi Gar Cham originated in the 15th century after it was revealed to the great
After Terton Gyalpo Pema Lingpa revealed his first treasure, the “Magyud Longsal”, he conducted transmission and empowerment ceremonies. His disciples expressed that the melodies and dances performed during the transmission and empowerment ceremonies were unlike anything they had ever experienced before. In response, Khandro Yeshi Tsogyal, dakini (enlightened female deity), appeared to Terton Gyalpo Pema Lingpa in his vision and revealed Khandroi Gar Cham dance to him.
The dancers wear the six bone ornaments and hold a damaru (hand drum) and bell. The melodies and movements of the dance are from Pema Lingpa's mind which he taught to his disciples.
The Khandroi Gar Cham was first performed in Dungkhabi, the same location where Pema Lingpa gave his first teachings. This highly blessed dance is performed to this day, particularly during the annual Tamshing Tshechu festival in Bumthang.
The Mask dance symbolizes the equality of men and women, without any distinction of superiority or inferiority. It further emphasizes that since wisdom—essential for attaining supreme spiritual achievement—is represented by the female gender, women should always be held in high esteem rather than belittling or regarding them as inferior.

The Origin and Purpose of Peling Nga Cham
In the 15th century, on the 15th day of the 4th month corresponding to 1481, when the great treasure revealer, Tertön Pema Lingpa, was residing at his seat in Peling Monastery, three dakinis (celestial beings) appeared before the great master. They presented him with a visionary revelation. From the wisdom eye, he perceived:
"On the glorious mountain with copper-coloured lies Pema Pelri palace (Zangdokpelri). In the radiant palace of Padma, the great gathering of accomplished masters is filled with bliss. The heroic dakinis perform their dance of joy in the supreme sacred place. O child, will you not come with delight?"
After receiving this visionary song, he was invited in a pure vision to the luminous realm of the Copper-Colored Mountain, the sacred palace of Guru Rinpoche. There, he received blessings, empowerments, and transmissions directly from Guru Rinpoche.
After receiving transmission from Guru Rinpoche, the three dakins requested Pema Lingpa to visit around the Zangdhopleri. As request he visited starting from eastern direction and proceeded gradually until he reached the north-western boundary, where lies a great and blissful copper palace. There, he saw a dakas and dakinis abide together without distinction of male and female. They are adorned with the instruments of music and dance. He joined them for a whole day in the performance of their songs, dances, and offerings. He received diverse masks and costumes.
Having received this sacred transmission, the great master Pema Lingpa brought it back in his enlightened mind stream. In 1505, he transmitted each chapter of the dance to his close disciples, especially to the two great ta***ic masters Cheyjay Natsho Randrol and Umze Drukpa Khenden.
From then on, this sacred dance was first performed during the consecration of Tamzhing Lhakhang, Pema Lingpa’s temple. Since that time, it is performed regularly as part of religious gatherings and ceremonies at Tamzhing.
The purpose of Peling Nga Cham to reveal the enlightened vision of Guru Rinpoche, to subdue harmful negative forces, to dispel evil intentions such as the division between male and female, good and bad, and to bring harmony, peace, happiness, and increase of merit and prosperity in this world.
This dance was revealed through the perfect enlightened intention of the great treasure revealer himself.

Origin and Purpose of the Peling Phagcham (Peling Pig Mask Dance).
The sacred Peling Phagcham (Peling Pig mask Dance) originated in the 16th century, around 1501. At the age of 52, Terchen Choe-kyi Gyalpo Rigzin Pema Lingpa was invited by the Chokhor Depa to consecrate the site for the construction of a temple in Tamzhing. While inspecting the area, Pema Lingpa witnessed the chief of the dakinis, Vajravarahi (Dorje Phagmo), perform a land-taming dance. He remembered all the steps of this powerful performance.
Later, he taught these movements to his disciples, and the tradition has been preserved and passed down without interruption ever since. This dance is a sacred “terchham.”
This dance is performed to pacify the negative emotions of attachment and aversion that are the root cause of global epidemics and conflicts. It aims to help people distinguish between good and bad and to subdue malicious thoughts, such as negative speech. Therefore, this blessed dance is performed annually for the public.
When the dance is performed, we should offer prayers from our own hearts with sincere wish that all negative thoughts of attachment and aversion present in all beings are pacified.
