Dr. Edward Cook, a renowned dendrochronologist from the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University, has played a pivotal role in advancing dendrochronological research in Bhutan. His collaboration and guidance have greatly contributed to the growth of this field, helping uncover Bhutan’s rich climatic and ecological history preserved in its forests. His enduring support and mentorship continue to inspire Bhutanese researchers and strengthen the foundation of dendrochronology across the Himalayan region.

Congratulations to Dr. Cook on his recent achievement — a well-deserved recognition of his remarkable contributions to science and global climate research.

MoU between MOSEL and DoFPS signed appertaining Agar Technology Transfer

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Department of Forests and Parks Services and the Maehongson Organic Social Enterprise Limited (MOSEL), a Private Company, based in Thailand, has been signed on 28th April, 2025. Recognizing the potential of the Maehongson Organic company in facilitating the transfer of agarwood production technology from Thailand to Bhutan, UWIFoRT worked on establishing formal relations with the MOSEL to promote cooperation through exchange programs and collaborative research in agarwood development in the country.

The parties through this collaboration envision to enhance the livelihoods of the people of rural Bhutan through promotion of Agarwood farming with enhanced technology, processing, and marketing. The MOSEL shall particularly assist in the research, development and transfer of successful inoculation technology, integrated product processing including support for equipment, establishing market linkages for exporting of agar products, and liaising and communicating with Agarwood Companies and Communities in Thailand.

The MoU had been signed by Dr Nichapat Srisatittum, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, on behalf of MOSEL, and Karma Tenzin, Director, Department of Forests and Parks Services.

Exciting days at the UWIFoRT Dendrochronology Lab! We are currently hosting ten enthusiastic students from the College of Natural Resources as part of their internship program.

Over the past few weeks, they have been learning essential dendrochronology techniques, including sample preparation, cross-dating, ring-width measurement, and data analysis. We’ve also introduced them to the applications of dendrochronology in climate reconstruction and forest management.

It’s inspiring to see their dedication as they dive into the fascinating stories hidden in tree rings.
