🚀 Something exciting is coming to Boost Academy!

We’re pleased to welcome Howard Evans, Raspberry Pi Coding Club Mentor, for a special presentation with our Grades 10–12 students on the possibilities of coding, robotics, artificial intelligence and digital innovation. Thanks to the Rotary Club of Nassau for their support.

The Raspberry Pi Coding Club Programme gives students the opportunity to move beyond simply using technology and begin creating with it. Through hands-on projects, students can explore:

🤖 Robotics & programming
🧠 Artificial Intelligence & voice control
⚡ Physical computing & sensors
🛰️ Astro Pi & space computing
💡 Creativity, critical thinking & problem-solving

Howard brings more than 19 years of experience in software development, enterprise systems, DevOps and technology solutions, along with a passion for helping young people develop real-world STEM skills.

This is an exciting opportunity for our older students to see where coding, technology and innovation can take them—and to learn about a programme that could open the door to some fascinating projects.

I came across this OECD study today and it really made me think about how much of a difference parents can make in their children’s learning without ever sitting down to “do school.”

We sometimes think supporting our children academically means helping with homework, buying extra workbooks or making sure they study for the next test.

But so much of learning happens in the ordinary moments.

Read a book together. Talk about what you read. Let your child ask a million questions. Ask them what they think. Count things when you're out shopping. Let them help you cook. Play a boardgame. Talk about why something happened. Let them get bored and figure out what to do. Have a real conversation at the dinner table.

These things may not look like “education,” but they are.

The OECD study found a positive relationship between the kinds of interactions parents have with their children at home and children’s literacy, numeracy and social-emotional development. Shared reading, in particular, stood out.

And I think this is an important reminder for parents:

You don't have to be a teacher to help your child learn. You just have to be involved.

Children need adults who talk to them, listen to them, encourage them, challenge their thinking and take an interest in the world around them.

Of course, school matters. But what happens at home matters too.

And sometimes the best thing we can do for our kids isn't another worksheet. It's putting the phone down, sitting beside them and saying, “Tell me about it.”

That's where a lot of learning begins.

For children five and under, books beat screens when it comes to learning.

The latest International Early Learning and Child Well-being Study shows that regularly reading books to children continues to be one of the most important learning activities that families can do - but it is not always that common.

In some jurisdictions, fewer than half of households read to their five-year-olds more than three times a week.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology is happy to celebrate International Literacy Day with our Reading on the Radio initiative where we will hear Bahamian authors, students and community partners read as we promote literacy and the importance of reading.

The impact of social media on our children's developing minds can not be overstated. I know that correlation is not causation, but I would dare say that the screen time of those who had A-C passes on their national exams was much lower than that of their peers who did not fare as well.

You wouldn't give your children drugs or let them gamble. Why let them have unfettered access to addictive apps and games? Hold your boundaries. It matters more than you know.

McKelton M. Johnson is a Bahamian political analyst, speaker, nonprofit leader, and community advocate dedicated to empowering the next generation of leaders. Born in Decatur, Georgia, and raised in Nassau, he has built a reputation for service, leadership, and civic engagement throughout The Bahamas and the United States.

Mr. Johnson is a graduate of Alabama A&M University and currently serves as a Senior Adjuster Analyst with Allstate Insurance, where he specializes in claims analysis, investigations, and customer advocacy. Prior to this role, he served as a Protocol Officer within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the
Commonwealth of The Bahamas, working alongside diplomats,
government officials, and international dignitaries in support of official state and diplomatic functions.

A passionate advocate for youth development, Mr. Johnson serves with the high school ministry at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in Houston, Texas. He is also President of Men to Gentlemen, a nonprofit organization.
