The vision of a Bahamian institution for higher learning in the maritime fields emerged from the country’s rich legacy of Maritime prominence in the international industry. The Bahamas, an archipelagic nation, is the world’s fifth largest Maritime Registry, a ranking that reflects The Bahamas’ enduring presence in a global industry that remains highly competitive. This global prominence also highl

ights the incredible yet virtually untapped potential to add significantly greater value to the Bahamian economy through shipping, by growing the numbers of qualified Bahamian seafarers and experts in the maritime business. Nearly 1,500 ships around the world carry the flag of The Bahamas. The LJM Maritime Academy (LJMMA) was borne out of a vision to put skilled Bahamians on each one of those ships and the many others that traverse the world’s seas. The Academy offers two options for cadet training: a diploma in nautical science deck/navigation, a 36-month programme and a diploma in marine engineering, a 39-month programme. The deck option charts the course for students aspiring to become Master Mariners and the engine option establishes the foundation for those aspiring to the ranks of Chief Engineer. Students enrolled in these programmes are engaged in theoretical and practical training and have access to the latest maritime technology, equipment and tools that meet the needs of an ever-changing industry.

LJM Maritime Academy proudly marked a significant milestone last Friday with the graduation of eight cadets, celebrating their dedication, discipline, and commitment to excellence in the maritime profession.

The graduating class was comprised of five Navigation graduates — Aaliyah Stuart, Lloyd Bodie, Derrick Hanna, Craigdera Deveaux, and Kaelen Knowles — and three Engine graduates — Terojernae Duncombe, Daniel Pinder, and Irvintae Taylor.

We also extend a special congratulations to Valedictorian Terojernae Duncombe, whose address reflected on the perseverance, discipline, and character that have defined this journey: “Today is not only a celebration of completing our studies; it marks the beginning of a new chapter.”

As they embark on their careers, we are confident that they will represent their families, our institution, and The Bahamas with distinction.

Congratulations to the LJM Maritime Academy Class of 2026! May you continue to be anchored in excellence and navigate the future with purpose.

LJM Maritime Academy was honoured to welcome The Hon. Chester Cooper, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education and Technical & Vocational Training, and the Hon. Leon Lundy, Minister of Transport, to its campus as they and their teams learned more about our mission, ongoing initiatives, and vision for the future.

Their visit provided an opportunity to highlight LJM's growing role in preparing Bahamians for careers in the maritime sector and supporting the nation's workforce development priorities. Discussions also included the Academy's continued growth, including plans to expand classroom facilities and enhance learning opportunities for current and future students.

We are grateful for the continued interest and support of our national leaders as we work to strengthen maritime education and create pathways to meaningful careers for the next generation.

⚓ Together, we are investing in the people, partnerships, and possibilities that will shape the future of The Bahamas. The future sets sail here.
