Lucaya International School (LIS) is an accredited, college preparatory, non-profit, independent, non-sectarian, co-educational day school governed by a Board of Directors. Founded on September 8, 1992, the school is designed to serve the children of the local and international community living on Grand Bahama. All classes are offered in English, with the exception of modern language courses. The

educational program is modeled along North American, British and International Baccalaureate Organization guidelines. The school year runs from mid-August to mid-June and has a minimum instructional period of 175 days divided into two semesters.

IB1 Orientation Day!

Our new IB1 students kicked off their IB journey with a day full of teamwork, reflection, learning, and fun!

They started by getting honest advice from our IB2 students — including what to do (and what NOT to do!) during the IB Diploma.

Through team-building activities, students developed their communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, putting the IB Learner Profile into action.

They also tackled their first TOK-style moral dilemma, debating the challenging question: Who would you save from a sinking boat — and why?

We finished the day with their first CAS experience, giving back to our community through a beach clean-up at Banana Bay.

As part of their PYP Natural Disasters Unit of Inquiry, our Year 3 students have been learning about hurricanes this week, while also remembering Hurricane Dorian, seven years on, and reflecting on its lasting impact on Grand Bahama and our community.

Today, students created their own satellite images of hurricanes, exploring what these powerful storms look like from above and connecting their learning to our own island’s history.

Our Eco-Schools students kicked off their first activity of the year by getting our hydroponic garden cleaned out and ready for a fresh new crop!

Students have also been busy planting seeds ready to germinate. Once the seedlings are strong enough, they’ll be transferred into our hydroponic system, where students will care for them and watch their fruits and vegetables grow.

A great hands-on way to learn about sustainable growing, food production and caring for our environment — we can’t wait to see what grows!

We are thrilled to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our LIS students at the 2026 National Arts Festival!

LIS achieved 8 National Winner titles, along with numerous Merits and Honors across our other performances.

Our National Winners:

Caroline Kroger & Sadie Wells – Drama: Dramatized Characterization

Eriel Barr – Dance: Modern Dance Solo

Luna Christie – Vocal Solo

Madelyn Callender – Strings

Maria Cuervo Reyes – Strings

Sara Hall – Piano

Years 7 & 8 – Choral Verse Speaking

Years 7 & 8 – Vocal: Triple Threat Broadway

We are so proud of all of our students who performed. They worked hard, put themselves out there, and represented LIS with confidence, enthusiasm, and creativity.

An incredible 40% of our entries earned National Winner titles, giving LIS one of the highest National Winner rates per capita in the country at the 2026 National Arts Festival.

For a school our size, this is a fantastic accomplishment!

A huge congratulations to all of our students and a special thank you to Mrs. Drackett-Hall, Miss Franks, and Mrs. Torkelson for their support, encouragement, and dedication along the way.

It’s been wonderful to welcome our Secondary students back to LIS!

The first few days have been filled with reconnecting with friends and teachers, settling into new routines, and getting straight back into learning.

There’s already a great energy around campus and we’re looking forward to an exciting year of learning and new opportunities ahead.

A Great Start to Our PYP Year!

Our Primary School kicked off the new PYP year with a whole-school assembly, taking time to reflect on our Essential Agreements and revisit the school rules and expectations that help make LIS a positive and respectful learning community.

Our Year 6 students, James Bowe and Nina Belton, demonstrated their risk-taking skills as they delighted our younger students with a lively reading of No, David! by David Shannon.

We were also delighted to welcome Nyla Beneby, who introduced her wonderful initiative, Swim Safe Bahamas, which she founded to promote water safety and awareness within our community.

It was wonderful to see our Primary students back together, engaged, smiling and ready to enjoy another year of learning.

To mark the occasion, our Seniors joined our youngest learners for a lesson — bringing together those just beginning their LIS journey with those preparing to complete theirs.
