A BRIEF HISTORY
Early in 1960, Wallace Groves, President of the Grand Bahama Port Authority, made a proposal to His Lordship Bishop Paul Leonard Hagarty that a grade school be founded in Freeport, Grand Bahama. The Port Authority offered to supply the necessary buildings if the Bishop would supply Sisters for teaching staff. Conclusive arrangements were made in March 1960, between the Bishop and M
other Leona Griffin, Mother General of the Franciscan Sisters of Clinton Iowa, to send three Sisters to Freeport, Grand Bahama. In August, 1960, Sister Mary Jeanine Bradford, Sister Mary Francis Burke, and Sister Mary Eleanor Dunning arrived in Freeport and took up temporary residence on Amundsen Lane in one of Wallace Groves’ Houses. The original school was temporarily set up in another of the Groves Houses in that area. In September, 1960, Mary Star of the Sea School was started with an enrollment of 29 Students. The present school plant began its growth in 1960 when the first wing was constructed. Since then the school has grown in Leap and Bounds with the completion of several new wings, the Art Room, a Library and extra washrooms. The school operates under the auspices of the Catholic Diocese.
