Mastering the Art of Public Speaking: The Importance of Public Speaking

NASSAU, Bahamas – Public speaking is very vital to the overall success of everyone.

Billionaire Warren Buffet credits much of his success to a Dale Carnegie Public Speaking Course and this shows more than enough proof. “I don’t have my diploma from the University of Nebraska hanging on my office wall and I don’t have my diploma from Columbia up there either, but I do have my Dale Carnegie graduation certificate proudly displayed”, he says. That $100 course gave me the most important degree I have. It’s certainly had the biggest impact in terms of my subsequent success he says.

I firmly believe that politicians, pastors, businesspeople, salespeople, accountants, television news people, journalist, publicists etc can all benefit greatly from a public speaking class.

I have seen cases where people have been promoted to a management or leadership position but do not posses the requisite speaking ability and when they have to address a meeting or a company seminar, they are totally afraid and their presentation is very below par and disappointing.

Persons who are able to speak well, can be a major influencer in organizations. In my own case, because of my great ability to speak well and motivate and inspire, I have been hired in so many different capacities; radio commentator, television host, company spokesperson, master of ceremonies, announcer at track and field meets, and list goes on and on.

The importance of public speaking cannot be overstated. It is important because it assist you with improving your knowledge.

The work and preparation that go into preparing a speech and the fact you have to work out how to communicate and which motivational quotes that will be applicable.

Public speaking is so paramount that it can be the deciding factor in many things such as your career development, your business growth and even in the relationships you have with your friends and family.

I am a history buff, and I would like to share in my opinion a few of the more memorable defining moments in history to show the importance of public speaking:

Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg address put him on the map for president. Without this speech he may not have been the Icon that he is today.
President Barack Obama address at the Democratic National Convention some years before he ran for the presidency
Adolf Hitler’s many fiery speeches were delivered with so much passion and caused arguably one of the most horrific genocides of all time
Martin Luther King gave his stirring “I Have a Dream Speech which inspired a nation and broke down racial barriers. Without his dynamic leadership and his inspirational speeches, it may have taken an extra 10 years to bring equality to all races.
President John F Kennedy moon speech at Rice University. His stirring speech largely written by Kennedy advisor and speechwriter Ted Sorensen was intended to persuade the American people to support the Apollo program, the national effort to land a man on the moon.
Public speaking can be an asset in any area of your life, whether personally, or professionally.

According to PAN, here are three distinct reasons why public speaking is important:
To Win over the Crowd – an important skill to have in business and especially in the public relations arena is the skill of persuasion or the ability to win over the crowd, inside or outside the workplace, the power of persuasion can carry you very far and it all starts by honing your public speaking skills.
To Motivate People – a great public speaker attains the power to motivate his or her audience to do something, stop doing something, a change of behavior, or reach an objective. But to carry an idea forward, you must be able to excite and enliven your peers, employees, co-workers, customers. Public speakers are leaders who are able to inspire their audience to work harder to achieve their goals. As a public speaker your role is to influence listeners and create an environment where everyone walks out ready to rock and roll.
To Inform – the ability to inform is one of the most important aspects of public speaking. From presenting research papers and PowerPoint presentations in school to presenting ideas and pitches to your boss or client, informative public speaking is a vital component of a successful career across all work fields.

Mastering the Art of Public Speaking: Giving Credit for Quotes in Your Speech

NASSAU, Bahamas – Giving credit for a quote that you use during your speech or presentation is of the utmost importance.

With the advancement of social media, I notice persons are posting motivational and inspirational quotes from well-known authors, speakers etc. without giving them credit for it.

As an international motivational speaker, corporate trainer and talk show host, I am very careful not to use a quote without giving the author credit.

I have my own original motivational quotes that I use from time to time but when I am speaking in the front of an audience I go the extra mile to acknowledge the author of the quote, by saying for example, according to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr “If a man is called to be a streetsweeper , let him sweep streets like Michelangelo painted or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry, he should sweep streets so well that all the host of heaven and earth will pause to say ‘here lived the greatest streetsweeper who did his job well.”

I recently had a real-life experience with this situation. Let me explain. While writing my article on Public Speaking, I used a beautiful poem by Marina Aris and I gave her credit. Well, just a few hours after the article was published, I received an email from this wonderful lady saying the following: “Hello Spence, great article on South Florida Caribbean News “Mastering Public Speaking: Five Key Tips for Overcoming Your Fear of Public Speaking “. I am sure it will be well received and thank you so much for including my poem. I am honored truly. I wish you more continued success. All the best. Marina Aris, Author, Speaker & Founder, Brooklyn Writers Project.” I was blown away by this. And very happy that I gave her due credit in my article.

As a speaker, you must be cognizant of the fact that there may be persons in your audience very familiar with the quotes and the authors, so please make sure give credit where it is due.

I take every opportunity to do this especially when someone is taking notes and ask you to please repeat the quote, I than say ‘now this is not my original quote, it’s from so and so.

Don’t give your audience a chance to see that you blatantly used someone else’s words as your own. It's downright stealing.

The great African American Motivational Speaker, Les Brown came to the Bahamas to speak at a conference for AT & T at The Atlantis Resort & Casino on Paradise Island in 2002. He invited me to watch his presentation and at the end he closed with his now famous “If you want a thing in life speech.”

While walking with him back to his suite at the Royal Towers of the resort, he asked me what I thought about his speech and I told him, “Les man, I can do your closing better than you.” He had big laugh and I said I use this closing for my presentations and speeches, and I just would like for you to know. So whenever, I am closing my speeches, I end on a high note with Les Brown stuff, making sure to say to the audience that this is not my own, it's from Les Brown, who was married to Gladys Knight, and I have permission to use this. “End of story.

Inspirational and motivational quotes are very powerful to use in your speeches at the appropriate time, they add zest to your speech.

I remember many years ago I bought a large hardback book with the ‘best motivational quotes’ I believe was published by Nightingale-Conant. I was so enamored with this book, that I frequently used it to research powerful motivational quotes. Now fast forward to the internet where you can find anything.

I am reminded about a famous case of plagiarism now that Joe Biden is thinking of entering the presidential race again.

According to CNN, Joe Biden during the 1988 Presidential election, the then presidential candidate was accused of mimicking a speech that British Labor Party Neil Kinnock delivered just four months prior.

CNN story continues, Kinnock’s speech included the following lines: Why am I the first Kinnock in a thousand generations to be able to get to university? Pointing to his wife in the audience. Why is Glenys the first woman in her family in a thousand generations to be able to get to university? Was it because all our predecessors were thick?

While according to CNN, Biden said: “I started thinking as I was coming over here, why is it that Joe Biden is the first in his family ever to go to a university? Pointing to his wife in the audience: Why is it that my wife who is sitting out there in the audience is the first in her family to ever go to college? Is it because our fathers and mothers were not bright? Is it because I’m the first Biden in a thousand generations to get a college and graduate degree that I was smarter than the rest?

The Vice President was forced to withdraw from the presidential race according to CNN, after Maureen Dowd of the New York Times exposed his plagiarized speech.

So finally, please make sure to give credit for the quotes that you use while giving a speech.

Mastering the Art of Public Speaking: Be Yourself

NASSAU, Bahamas – When I first started speaking as a motivational speaker some 30 plus years ago in my native Bahamas, I was told by a number of persons that I sounded like African American Motivational Speaker, Les Brown. It was flattering but I did not try to copy his style.

We all bring certain unique gifts to this world and my speaking ability is certainly one of my many gifts from my Creator that I am so grateful for.

I met Les Brown for the very first time in person around 1987 at a “Motivational Monday “event in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and sponsored by WNN for winners only motivational radio station based in Pompano Beach at that time. Les did his thing and everyone was obviously impressed. We chatted afterwards for a short while and there was some similarity to our vocal styles as speakers. But I never changed my speaking style or accent. I remained myself. So I encourage you to be yourself when you are speaking publicly.

There is no need to try and speak like anyone else.

I remember vividly conducting a training program for a large commercial bank in the Bahamas 28 years ago and I was so well received by the employees who thought that I was simply a great motivational speaker and that the other branches of the bank in the Caribbean should get an opportunity to hear me speak.

I was told by a senior member of the bank that the Vice-President did not think that the employees in the Caribbean branches would be able to understand me. I was disappointed to say the least, but time proved me right.

You see, I never changed my accent or tried to speak like one of the top speakers at that time. I remained true to me and from my very first speaking engagement in the beautiful Cayman Islands, I was warmly and enthusiastically accepted.

In Curacao, in the Dutch Caribbean, I was invited to speak to the Toastmasters Club and when I was finished, I received a standing ovation and the president said, “where did you come from man, a real Caribbean man, who can speak as well as all the named speakers from the US.” I was blown away by his comments.

One of the things that I always admired about my fellow countryman, the late Dr. Myles Munroe, was that he never dropped his Bahamian accent no matter where he was speaking or preaching. He was himself. He spoke in his natural way and was an overwhelming success.

I remind you today to be yourself when you are on the podium.

On a side note, I saw Dr. Myles Munroe a few weeks before he died at Sports Radio 103.5FM where I hosted my own talk show called Dare to Be Great. He invited me to go with him to Africa on one of his many speaking excursions on that continent. However, unfortunately this was not to be, Dr. Munroe died tragically in a plane crash while going to his annual leadership conference in Freeport, Grand Bahama.

I remain true to myself when speaking and presenting, but I adopted my favorite musical group, the Tempting Temptations, high energy and stage presence. So, you must remember that it's showtime when you hit the stage to speak or present. You have to own the stage; you cannot be timid. Your audience can smell your fear.

Many years ago, while watching a church service on BET or TBN, I saw an African American preacher who ruled the stage, and his movements were quick, deliberate, precise and inspiring all at once. I liked his energy, style and passion.

A quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson say’s to be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great accomplishment.”

Oscar Wilde said “Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation. “

Friedrich Nietzsche said about being yourself “the individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.”
