"What She Let Go to the Moon"

-A Hymn for Quiet Release-
I sat on the back of the old Turtle
the night I finally let go.
I did not burn what I was releasing.
I did not bury it.
I did not say what it was.
I only opened my hand to the wind.

And the wind, who had been waiting,
gathered it like smoke
and carried it up
to where the Moon was already listening,
her face turned slightly
the way grandmothers turn their faces
when a child is finally ready
to speak the hard thing.

The Moon did not ask what it was.
The Moon did not give it back.
She only took it -
quietly, the way night takes a lamp -
and the world was somehow lighter
than the world had been before.
