The verb "to be" has Present tense forms am, is, are (e.g., I am, he is, they are)
Past tense forms: was, were (ex: I was, they were), used to describe states of being now or at a past time.
Present Tense (Now)
I am: I am happy.
You are: You are a student.
He/She/It is: He is tall; She is a teacher; It is raining.
We are: We are friends.
They are: They are at the park.
Past Tense (Then)
I was: I was at the store.
You were: You were late.
He/She/It was: He was tired; She was a child; It was cold.
We were: We were at the concert.
They were: They were playing
