Meet our kids

Through the aid of AIESEC, volunteers from different countries invested their time and energy to help the organization to proceed with its purpose. With the help of these young individuals we are trying to promote the organization and spread the awareness about the everyday difficulties of poor regions of Brazil at the international level. The main objective of this project is to identify resources for children and develop web-based tools to increase awareness and find the support from those who care. This is a unique opportunity for kids to get in touch with young representatives of different cultures and enlarge their horizons.

The Creche, Escola Prof. Helenita de Assis is the daycare center that provides their students with secure place to study and progress.

Creche, Escola Comunitária Professora Helenita Gomes Pereira de Assis is a daycare center located in the Periperi suburb north of Salvador, Brazil. The estimated population of the Periperi regions is about one hundred thousand. We are a non-for-profit entity established in 1995 with the primary objective of educating children ranging in age between 2-6 years old. Our service to the children is free.

The neighborhood of Periperi is very needy and poor. It is a sub district north of Salvador, in the Brazilian State of Bahia. Level of education is extremely low and most of the inhabitants lack a high school education; a consequence of the poor level of the economy of the region. Latin American favelas are very dangerous places that can have a dreadful influence on the kids' brain and imagination. Moreover, standards of leaving of favelas are not appropriate to upraise and rear children of this age. The families consist usually of two parents or single mothers with kids. This situation is worsened by the fact that families usually have severe debts and parents have work on several jobs to earn a living. The daycare center was established to solve this problem and give a shelter for kids to live, grow, and study in order to become more of who they are.

The daycare was founded on February 24, 1995. Violence within this community was high and living conditions, especially for children, were dangerous. Children were continuously exposed to adverse situations and chronic stress. Mr. Expedito decided to take action to help his community and hence the creation of the daycare. It took a tremendous effort and sacrifice, along with the use of some personal resources, for Mr. Expedito to initiate and sustain this project. He and his family went door to door seeking support from local merchants to aid with the establishment of this daycare.
Today, the daycare is a bit over 20 years old. To see and appreciate some of the impact Mr. Expedito has, one must visit the daycare and see and interact with the children. One cannot help but notice their pure smiles, filled with joy and happiness; they are curious and playful. The daycare provides them with a safe place where they can be kids; interact with one another and allow their innocence and vulnerability to be exposed. The daycare gives them a chance to dream and hope. It is the vision of this man, along with all of those that contributed over the years, that inspire those kids and lets them know, that kindness still exists in this world. Mr. Expedito’s unwavering dedication still lingers despite all challenges. To Mr. Expedito we say, Thank You. You are a magnanimous man, and we salute your dedication and efforts.
