INDEPENDENCE OR DEATH!
An important chapter in the history of Brazil was written on the banks of the River Ipiranga, in São Paulo, on a day like today, in 1822.
According to classical historiography, it was on September 7th, in a moment that was marked by "Grito do Ipiranga" (the Scream of Ipiranga), proclaimed by D. Pedro 1st. With his famous words "Independência ou Morte" (Independence or Death!), D. Pedro 1st decreed the end of Portuguese domination in Brazilian territory.
Pedro Ist was't the only one responsible for the Independence of Brazil. Emancipation was the result of a succession of social, political and economic events, in addition to the great participation of an intellectual layer linked to the agrarian elite.
