For the upcoming Africa-Asia, A New Axis of Knowledge Conference-Festival 3 in Dakar (Senegal), we are inviting proposals in English, French and Portuguese.

The ConFest is organized by the Cheikh Anta Diop University, the Collective Africa-Southeast Asia Platform and IIAS. We look forward to welcoming you to this experiment in academic, civic, local–global, and inter-regional collaboration!

Kenyan participation in FESTAC, the Pan-African cultural festival held in Lagos in 1977, invited reflections on national culture in Kenyan leading newspapers that intersected with broader debates on how the post-independent State was being run. This paper will present some of the key points in these discussions, including the “expatriate” crisis and the “Africanisation” of cultural and higher education institutions, the general direction of cultural policy, as well as the settling of the national narrative about independence and the undelivered promises of liberation.
