There are so many people that I have had a students that love music from the United States, but never translate the songs. So essentially they sing the songs all the time they love the songs, but don’t know what they’re saying and miss the opportunity to use the song to learn English grammar and vocabulary.

Aside from that many of the people that I met here in Brazil love rap music, they love, 2Pac, Wu-Tang, Mobb Deep, mini groups. They constantly talk about the violence in our communities, but they asked me why I decided to move to Brazil when I lived in a place less violent. And I say, why aren’t you a super fan of these groups? Don’t you listen to the crazy violence that they talk about they even say no, or they think it’s fake, which leads me to believe that people need to work on their level of curiosity to be able to adequately efficiently learn English through things that you already like to do and to learn that there are other places that are bad and have crime and violence. Brazil is not the only place in the world OK.

Let’s be more curious in our English learn journey

Use this video to practice your English listening! And please stop comparing yourself and your life to others, it is horrible for your mental health.

The algorithm thinks I want to see videos of Brazilians comparing prices in the US. I am absolutely not interested in that kind of content, it focuses on one reality while ignoring others, painting an incomplete picture for people causing thousands of people in these last 10 years to ask me why would I move here when Im from the glorious US, when many of the people I know in the US would love to have the ability to what I did a decade ago.

Do you guys consume that type of content that only shows positive side of the US without telling all sides of the story?

Let’s talk about it

Different people usually have different perspectives about the same thing. When I posted about the military dictatorship in Brazil, many people said there was no dictatorship and it was a regime.

I knew and understand that, but what I did not expect was so many people to say that things were better in Brazil during the dictatorship . But that doesn’t surprise me because there are many people that say that things were better in the United States during our dictatorship.

Whenever I say things like that many people that the US never had a dictation, but that depends on your perspective. I can see how many people could say make America great again if they thought that in some point in the past, America was great if I were a white man in the 1910s 19 twenties 1930s 40s 50s 60s I would think that was an amazing time to live in the United States, but as a black man, we know that our particular dictatorship had a name: Jim Crow.

many people will probably comment on this video and say that they know that the US never had a dictatorship, but I always tell people that’s because you never really learned about the history of the nation that you idolize because if you look at history through my perspective, then you would understand that the Jim Crow system that we suffered for about 100 years is exactly what a dictatorship is but only for Black people. For all the suffering, murder torture that we faced., many many (non-black) people still think that that was a better time to live.

So I can completely understand a person, especially if that person is from the right wing that would say that things were better during the dictators because it did not affect them and they benefited from it as they felt safer. But I guarantee millions of people don’t have that same opinion because different people usually have different perspectives about the same thing.
