Tricks to get motivated
Motivation is what separates the winners from the losers in life.
I don't care what it is that you want out of life, health, wealth, love, or happiness, you will have to draw on intense powers of motivation to get it.
Today I was reading two books that got my mind spinning on the subject from the Nobel peace prize winner, Elie Wiesel and his book "Open Heart" and Seth Godin's "The Dip."
Here is a quick overview to five new ways to motivate yourself:
1. Learn when to quit: The hard wiring of you brain is very good at knowing when you are spinning your wheels doing something that is not inline with your 'end game' goal. Maybe it's a mindless career in a 9-5 job you hate, or a relationship with someone you know is the wrong person.
No matter how hard you try you probably will never be able to trick your mind into getting motivated around something that you know deep down is the wrong thing to be doing. It's better to just quit and make a big change.
Seth Godin says in "The Dip":
"Sometimes we get discouraged and turn to inspirational writing, like stuff from Vince Lombardi: 'Quitters never win and winners never quit.' Bad advice. Winners quit all the time. They just quit the right stuff at the right time...
Extraordinary benefits accrue to the tiny minority of people who are able to push just a tiny bit longer than most. Extraordinary benefits also accrue to the tiny majority with the guts to quit early and refocus their efforts on something new. Quit the wrong stuff. Stick with the right stuff. Have the guts to do one or the other.”
Most of us are either birds or bulldogs. Birds fly off at the first sign of trouble. Bulldogs hold on and don't let go.
Looking back at my life I tend to be a bulldog. Sometimes it helps me. Sometimes it backfires on me.
The solution is the to find the balance.
How can you avoid being the bird or the bulldog?
2. Control your contrasts: Jonathan Haidt, the famous NYU professor, said that if you make $1 million dollars and then you move into a neighborhood where everyone makes $10 million dollars, you will not feel contented even though you are now a millionaire.
Our brain uses a relative scale to measure.
It's the same with motivation. You must be careful of who you contrast your life with. Motivation comes from comparing your current state with the right people. You have to spend 33% of your time around people more motivated than you.
And this contrast can be taken further. Elie Wiesel was 15 when he was sent to Auschwitz, the concentration camp. He saw his little 5 year old sister taken away and gassed. When he was freed from the death camp, he never forgot. He had a powerful contrast. He knew how bad things could get. So years later at 82 after he was recovering from open heart surgery he wrote, "What is different is that I now know that every moment is a new beginning, every handshake a promise."
His experience transformed his contrasts.
So be sure to not just stay in your bubble. Get out in your city. Visit those poorer than you. Visit those richer than you. Visit a third world country. Volunteer at an old folks home.
Keep things in perspective.
Motivation comes from contrasts and accurate perspective.

Never Give up
Once you give up it's over.
When you give up you automatically fail.
You can't give up on your goals.
Believe in yourself and believe that
you can and will succeed.
Keep working toward your goals
Keep doing different things to achieve your goals
Most people never achieve their goals because
they quit just when they're on the verge of
fulfilling their dream.
Let's face it: if you give up it's over and nothing changes.
Those who quit always fail
Those who succeed never give up
I know some of you will say:
"AJ, I haven't given up. I've been trying for
the past 15 years and nothing has changed.
I keep trying and nothing works.
I simply can't go on anymore."
Succeeding isn't about doing the same thing over and
over again and hoping for a different result.
That's insanity.
By never giving up, you continue moving toward your
goals but you have to always try something different
until you find what works - then you keep doing what works
Today I'll show you how to find what works, how to
stay committed to your goals so you reach or surpass them

To achieve your goals and enjoy success you have to
stay on course despite any distractions or barriers
you may encounter
Your mind will often convince you to give up
It's only because your mind is used to giving up and
it's comfortable with failure.
Success can be jarring, it's not in your comfort zone,
you're not used to it and neither is your mind.
So you keep doing things that lead to failure or you
keep giving up (automatic failure).
So you get frustrated, try again only to give up again
because things don't work out.
This habit is planted on your subconscious mind. Your
subconscious and your inner powers just follow this
habit and keep creating more failure or help you come
up with reasons to give up.
You have to break this habit.
Because you don't want failure, you want success.
So you have to push your mind in a different direction and
you have to give your subconscious mind and your inner
powers a new habit to follow - one that leads to success.
To do that you have to try different things, take
different approaches, be open minded when ever you feel
like giving up. You also have to get rid of the negative
thoughts that make you feel like giving up.
These are thoughts and beliefs like:
"It will never work, I can't do that, it's too hard,
I don't know how, I'm not good enough, I'm not
smart enough, I'm scared." And so on.
If any of these thoughts sound familiar then you
have some negative thinking habits planted on your
subconscious mind. Your subconscious will simply follow
these habits and force you to give up again and again.
So you have to get rid of these negative thinking
habits, and plant new positive thinking habits that
force your subconscious and inner powers to help
you achieve your goals.
Starting right now you can no longer give up before
even getting started.
Starting today you instruct your subconscious mind and
your inner powers to help you succeed.
Today you them that you're open to new options, that
you're ready to succeed and that you're ready to do what you
have to so you achieve your goals.
Today you tell your subconscious and inner powers that
you're willing to learn, grow and experience new things and
explore different options so you succeed and get what you want.
Today you give your subconscious mind and your inner powers
new instructions, so that they drive you to succeed.
You can achieve your goals..
Try a different approach.
Be willing to learn something new.
Get rid of the negative thinking habits that are
blocking your success. Instruct your subconscious mind and
your inner powers to bring you the success you want
and deserve - take charge of your subconscious and your
inner powers today so that you get exactly what you want
Think about what you want.
Then take a look at what you've been doing
to achieve that goal, write it down if you have to.
Next direct your mind and subconscious mind and
your inner powers to find new ways to achieve your goals.
Don't accept the idea or the belief that
you've tried everything.
If you had truly tried everything you would
have been successful already.
The truth is you've only tried everything that
you know and if you haven't succeeded then there's something
that you don't know or something that you haven't tried.
Now you have to get your mind and subconscious mind and
your inner powers to help you find a way to succeed and
get what you desire.
Thomas Edison went through ten thousand experiments
before he figured out how to invent the light bulb.
He stayed persistent, tried a different approach and never
believed he knew everything.
If you want to be wealthy, think of all the things
you have tried, and then instruct your subconscious and
your inner powers to help you find a way to make and
have more money.
What ever it is you want to achieve your subconscious and
your inner powers can help you and can make sure you
succeed - you just have to give them the right instructions,
you have to keep working toward your goals and you
can never give up. Start directing your amazing powers
to bring you exactly what you want today
Until today no one told you that you can direct
your subconscious mind and your inner powers
to bring you the success you want.
No one told you that you have to get rid of the
negative thinking habit that holds you back and
blocks your success.
You may not have known that your subconscious and
inner powers can bring you exactly what you want
if you only gave them the right instructions.
Well now you know.
Now you know you can direct your powers so that
they bring you exactly what you want.
Now it's up to you to take charge and get your
powers to bring you the success you deserve.
So take charge today and give your subconscious and

This power is your subconscious mind.
It's connected to you, it is tied to your mind,
your thoughts, your beliefs, the Universe, your
higher power and God
To direct the power of your subconscious mind you
need to change the way you see things, change
the way you see yourself, change your thoughts
and change your beliefs
If you want to be successful then you have to
see yourself as someone who can be successful
If you want to be in a healthy, loving and
caring relationship, then you have to see yourself
being in a loving, caring relationship.
If you don't believe you can do something
you never will and you'll always fail.
Think about it... If you don't believe in yourself,
why should anybody else believe in you?
You can no longer accept any limiting or
negative thoughts and beliefs that prevent
you from accomplishing your goals.
For example: If you want to be successful
you can no longer say, think or believe that:
"It's too difficult to be successful;
I don't know what to do.
I never get any great opportunities.
My parents never encouraged me
My friends don't support me
Everybody around me is too negative
I don't get any positive feedback"
These are all negative statements, thoughts
and beliefs that prevent you from
achieving your goals.
Now it's time to eliminate them and change
them into statements that help you
achieve your goals.
If you keep the negative statements you
have your power, your subconscious mind,
the Universe, Your higher power all working
against you - they're not
bringing you what you want.
Instead, they're bringing you what you don't want.
Your Power Within, your subconscious mind
is always working. But if you don't use it
the right way, if you don't give it the
right instructions, if you don't control it
and direct it your subconscious, your power
within will end up working against you. And
that's why things may never workout for you.
Start using your Power Within to achieve your goals.
Start directing and controlling your subconscious so
that it works in your favor. Give your subconscious, your
power with, your higher power and the universe the
right instructions so they bring you what you desire
Only you can determine your own success.
It doesn't matter if people around you are negative.
You don't need encouragement and support
from friends or family.
You only need to believe and see yourself
and see yourself as being successful.
Once you do that, once you raise the bar a
little higher, once you see yourself as fully capable
of achieving your goals you can then begin
to direct your subconscious mind so that
it begins attracting opportunities for you to be successful.
So don't believe the excuses or reasons that
your mind gives you. Take a look at where you are
today and decide what kind of life you want to live.
Start seeing yourself as successful in every
aspect of your life. Once you see yourself as
successful you will be able to direct your mind
and subconscious mind and start using your power
within to help you achieve your goals. Get started today:
Start focusing on what you want.
Don't focus on what you don't want, or
what went wrong or what might go wrong.
Think about what you want regularly and
believe you can have the life you want.
Up until now you may not have know that you
have this amazing power. You may not
have realized that you can direct your power
to bring you exactly what you want.
Now you know. And now it's up to you to take
charge, direct and instruct your power
to bring you what you desire
Now you can put an end to the struggle,
hardship and pain. Now you can live the
kind of life you want - you just have to
direct your amazing power to bring you
what you want - and I'm showing you
how in a simple, easy to use system-Believe in yourself
Today you to start using your power within.
Now start directing and instructing your subconscious
mind. Don't settle for less when you have awesome powers
that you can direct and work with to create the life you want.
All you have to do is give them the right instructions

This is a little uncomfortable
I want you to be uncomfortable.
Why would I say such a thing?
Sounds kind of harsh, doesn’t it?
Well, think about it…let me explain. If you are comfortable, then you are not moving, growing, or improving yourself.
The moment you become comfortable with your life, is the moment you become complacent and stagnant. In that environment, the human spirit deteriorates, and success will forever elude you.
We are not implying that you should never sit back and relax and take some time off to enjoy your family, friends, vacations, or holidays.
That’s not the point at all. Those things are very important to do, as long as it is balanced.
If you work your guts out when it’s time to work, then by all means…reward yourself with some R&R! You deserve it.
However, you can’t be a “spectator” of life, and ever expect the same rewards as the “stars” who are putting in the work.
Think of the people who have the body you want, the money you want, the great relationships you desire, the degree or education you wish you had, and the spiritual peace of mind you hope for.
They take a chance and put themselves in a foreign environment.
One that makes them push their limits.....And they dont give up on it just because its strange or new or scary or difficult.
They Make it a habit to be uncomfortable......make that thing that is strange to them a habit until it becomes a reality and part of their life.
Then it is no longer uncomfortable.
Then they make it their daily life.
Success is the result of performing the right daily habits over time.
Let’s look at an example of how this works.
Really, you could apply this principle to just about anything new you wanted to learn.
For this example, say you want to learn how to play the piano. I want you to break down this process and see how habits would play a role in your success of this undertaking.
You might find a piano teacher, or a home video program to use as a tutorial, so you know where to begin.
From the instructor, you will learn the fundamentals of music, and they will show you the basics of what to do.
They will begin to help you understand how to read music and where to put your hands, and how to play the notes.
But, when does the actual learning begin?
What takes you from a beginner on the piano playing chopsticks, to an advanced pianist playing Chopin, Beethoven and Rachmaninoff with grace and ease? Could something like this happen overnight?
Or even in a year…or even FIVE for that matter? No.
Habits may take many years of practice to perfect.
If you want to go from Chopsticks to Chopin, you must develop the consistent, DAILY HABIT of practice. Someone who wants to be an advanced pianist must be completely dedicated to perfecting their craft. Not, just once a week, or every few days, but EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.
The more often you practice, and the more hours you put in, the quicker your result, and the better you will become. There is no easy, quick fix method to accomplish such a task. The daily habit of practice MUST be implemented, or the result will be mediocrity.
Can you see how this same concept could be applied in whatever it is you want to accomplish?
There are certain habits that can be associated with just about any goal you wish to achieve.
In the coming articles in this series, we’ll be discussing “Habits for Happiness” in different aspects of our lives, and how to change the ones that are sabotaging our desired results.

Language Point - Emphasizing with 'do'
We can use the auxiliary verb 'do' to add emphasis. For example, Paul said "I do want to spend some quality time with Jake" to show how strongly he feels about this.
We can also show contrast with 'do'. For example, we can contrast what was expected with what actually happened by saying, 'The food was cheap as anything but it did taste fantastic.'
We form this emphasis or contrast with 'do' or 'did'+ base verb. For example, "I do want to spend some quality time with Jake".
Contrasting and comparing with 'do':
1. We can show contrast between something that's true and something that's false:
She does know how to swim, she just doesn't want to go swimming with you!
He says he didn't steal the book but I saw him. He did steal it.
1. We can show contrast between a general rule and an exception:
I don't like sports very much but I do love watching tennis.
She doesn't eat meat or fish but she does eat eggs.
1. We can show contrast between how something looks and how it really is:
She makes ice-skating look easy but she does practise every day for hours.
They fight like cat and dog but deep down they really do love each other.
1. We can show compare what is expected with what actually happens:
He said he was going to fail his exam and, sure enough, he did fail!
She thought she wouldn't like the museum but she really did enjoy herself there.
Showing emphasis with 'do':
I do want to spend some quality time with Jake
I do apologise for being so late.
He does bake very good cakes, doesn't he?
We did enjoy your party very much.
She does love her new house. No wonder she wanted to give you the full tour

Animal vocabulary + Idioms
There are some words and expressions in English we use to describe animals which can also be used to talk about people.
Animal parts:
horns
1. two hard, pointed, often curved parts that grow from the top of the head of some animals (e.g. bulls, goats)
Don't make the bull angry or he might hurt you with his horns.
2. lock horns (expression)
to begin an argument or fight
As soon as she started talking politics, they locked horns.
a wing
1. a part of the body which a bird or insect uses for flying
The eagle spread her wings and flew far away.
2. a horizontal part of an aircraft that sticks out from the side of it and supports it when it is flying
I don't like window seats on a plane. I hate seeing the wing move through the clouds.
a tail
1. a part of an animal's body, usually sticking out from the base of the back
You know when a dog is happy because he wags his tail.
2. the tail wagging the dog
the least important part of a situation has too much influence over the most important part or a large group has to do something to satisfy a small group
Talk about the tail wagging the dog! She's only 5 years old but decides what the family should do every weekend.
Animal sounds:
howl
1. a long, sad sound a dog or wolf makes if it's in pain
2. make a loud sound, usually to express pain, sadness or another strong emotion
She howled in pain when she fell off her bike and broke her arm.
roar
1. a long, loud, deep sound an animal (lion or tiger) makes
2. shout loudly
'Stop right now!' he roared.
grunt
1. the sound a pig makes
2. a short low sound a person makes instead of speaking
Talk to me. Don't just sit there behind your newspaper, grunting!
Bird idioms and expressions:
put all your eggs in one basket
depend on one person or plan of action for your success
I know you're confident about getting that job but I don't think you should put all your eggs in one basket. Why don't you apply for a few more, just in case?
take someone under your wing
protect and take care for someone
When my niece came to live in London she was a bit lonely so I took her under my wing till she settled in and made new friends at work.
be no spring chicken
be no longer young
He might dye his hair and wear the latest styles but he's no spring chicken and he's not fooling me!
a nest egg
a sum of money that you have saved or kept for a special purpose (for example, for when you retire)
We've saved a little bit every month since my daughter was born and now that she's ready to go off to university our nest egg will help pay for her education.

completely free to do as you want
Now that she's retired she's as free as a bird and is already planning her round-the-world cruise.

In today's Book-Of-the-Day I read Arnold Schwarznegger's autobiography "Total Recall" and found something infinitely powerful.
Arnold turned his mind into a resolution fulfillment machine..
I was left with the thought: "Imagine if you could be good at anything you wanted..."
Snap your fingers and be able to speak fluent French,English,Spanish, play Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata on the piano, run a marathon, recite Shakespeare, or get 6 pack abs.
Well most of us never quite seem to be able to pull these off. We blame it on being too old, a bad memory, not enough time, or being too tired.
And wow - all I can say is love Arnold or hate him you have to say that he
knows how to turn dreams into reality (and I don't mean that in the trite,
cliche way you usually hear).
Arnold is a man who literally fulfilled his whole checklist of dreams:
Immigrate to America
Move to California
Become Mr. Olympia Bodybuilder
Make A Million Dollars
Become the #1 Actor in the world
Get Elected for Governor of California
His secret? A little seed planted deep in his mind at 5 years old. His dad
would make him do 1 or 2 sets of 5 push-ups to earn the right to eat breakfast or the right to play with his toys. His parents used this strategy to instill the concept that if Arnold wanted some reward he had to earn it through repetitions.
Let's call it "Reps & Sets":
To get what you want, you practice one thing over and over until you get good at.
Arnold used this concept of "Reps & Sets" for the rest of his life. To get more muscles than anyone he decided to just do more repetitions - more practice than anyone else. At one point he was working out 6 hours a day. He would do 500 sit-ups or 1000 calf raises a day.
Ridiculous but effective. By age 25 he was the #1 bodybuilder of all time.
Next he decided he wanted to become a millionaire before age 30 (he wasn't an actor yet).
What did he do? Same thing, reps and sets. He just went out and practiced real estate until he had made his first million. He would spend 8 hours a day walking the streets of Santa Monica looking at houses, apartment buildings, condos and talking to realtors and investors until he knew everything inside and out.
He just out practiced everyone - out hustled them. He was a work horse.
Next he wanted to become a Hollywood star. But his foreign accent was in the way. So he practiced with a speech coach 7 hours a day until he had toned down the accent. Eventually he made $29.5 million for Terminator 2, the highest ever at the time.
Then at 40, he used reps and sets in politics despite the fact he started out knowing very little. That didn't deter him. He just spent 5 or 10 hours a day learning from a cabinet of political advisers until he felt confident he could govern the largest state in the USA.
So if you want to learn Spanish, or English, or make more money next year - Simply do MORE HOURS OF PRACTICE - MORE REPS & SETS.
It worked every time for Arnold. Ignore all the books and articles falsely teaching you that you can just skip the hard work of practice. It's a lie we all have fallen for at one time or another. Remember in most things there simply are no shortcuts.
"When you have something hard to do, just jump right in, and the next thing you know you will be done."
So stop thinking about how much work it will take to live out your dreams - just jump in and the next thing you know you will have achieved them.
Remember, the process of practicing can be fun. It's not all about finishing. It's like John Lennon said, "Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans."
Go hit the gym today, learn Russian, start a new internet business. Or really go all out and do all 3 of these at once. Find something super hard like learning calculus and do it just for fun to start rewiring your mind to love the 'burn'.
Strike up a passionate affair with the challenging pain of mastering new skills. Remember the pain is temporary and the rewards for high skill levels in difficult fields are amazing.
The reward is what Socrates called 'The Good Life'. You will find what everyone wants: Health, Wealth, Love, & Higher Purpose.
