USP Conference speakers: Brian Schmidt
Is a Distinguished Professor of Astrophysics at The Australian National University Mount Stromlo Observatory , and at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics. He is widely known for his research in using supernovae as cosmological probes. He currently holds an Australian Research Council Laureate Fellowship.
Elected to the Australian Academy of Sciences and United States Academy of Sciences in 2008, and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2012.
Schmidt shared both the 2006 Shaw Prize in Astronomy and the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics with Saul Perlmutter and Adam Riess for providing evidence that the expansion of the universe is accelerating.

Rapid technological advances and scientific discoveries are revolutionizing research in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Cosmology. The latest observations are revealing the first stars and galaxies which were born shortly after the Big Bang, as well as the intricate web of galaxies across the Universe.
The next decade will see an exciting wave of instruments that should change our knowledge about the formation of our Galaxy, the evolution of the Universe and the natures of dark matter and dark energy.
This Conference will review how progress in these areas has been achieved, and what are the key issues and challenges ahead.
