Why has Medellín become a hub for sustainability innovation?

This Colombian city is a global symbol of sustainable innovation, experiencing a transformation via imaginative projects.

With more than thirty green corridors, Medellín is creating fresh and sustainable spaces for its residents. Furthermore, its metro cables have increased mobility in hilly areas, improving connectivity between remote regions.

It was awarded the 2016 Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize in Singapore for its urban vision, inventiveness, and dedication to sustainability. In this sense, Medellin encourages other cities to adopt strategies for turning challenges into opportunities for everybody.

The weather in Medellín is just about perfect, with average year-round temperatures of around 22°C (72°F) and daily highs of over 30°C (86°F), the climate is about as good as it gets. It does rain a fair amount – as in any tropical country – but it rarely gets cold.

These are some of the great reasons why you should experience ‘The City of Eternal Spring’ at least once in your lifetime.

We’re glad to share that our newest publication is out now.

Our latest paper in Nature Portfolio - Ecology & Evolution reveals contrasting trends in Brazilian Amazonia: a decrease in deforestation rates but a surge in uncontrolled fires.

📊 Key Findings:

- Deforestation alerts dropped by 42% from Jan to July 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.
- The number of active fires in June 2023 is the highest since 2007.
- Only 19% of 2023’s fires are linked to recent deforestation, signaling a shift connected to policy and climate change.

📚 Read the full paper for in-depth analysis and insights: https://rdcu.be/doHy0

Together, let’s push for integrated land management to mitigate both deforestation and wildfires in Amazonia, while guaranteeing sustainable livelihoods for the local populations.
