The Song That Nearly Died
-------
Paul leaned back from the Blüthner grand piano and ran his hands through his hair. He looked up, fixing his gaze on the textured ceiling as though searching for answers within its intricate patterns. George was fidgeting with the strings of his guitar cradled in his arms. John, stationed on the bass, gnawed on his bandaged index finger with a far-off look in his eyes, as if lost in a deep daydream. And Ringo, exhausted, stretched his arms while sitting behind his kit, which was concealed by a drum shield. They all seemed to be waiting for a guest—a muse, a spark of inspiration—to rescue them. A gentle incomplete piano chord progression filled the room, accompanied by nonsensical gibberish serving as melodic placeholders. No sooner had they started than they came to a full stop. Tension mounted inside Paul, reminiscent of the struggle to start a car with a dead battery. Was it the pressure of an upcoming show that was constantly being delayed? Perhaps it was the role of leader that seemed to fall on him by default.
Relationships among the Fab Four were a mess during a time when they were searching for that perfect harmony, but it wasn’t there. I had always thought that musical inspiration simply fell on the Beatles like rain in a tropical season. However, on this particular day in January 1969, there was a drought.
Today, you and I stand on the other side of history, we know the song well. If you’re like me, well into your 50s, perhaps this song brings back childhood memories. It would be the sort of song that would come on the car radio, and my dad would manage to get all the lyrics wrong, but sing them nonetheless in perfect harmony with Paul. Man, I miss his voice. Over its existence, more than 18 artists, including Ray Charles with the Count Basie Orchestra, Aretha Franklin, and George Benson, have covered it—a testament to its enduring love. It's astonishing to think that this song almost met its end. Because back on that day, Paul rubbed his eyes in frustration, admitting, “I can’t sort of think how to do this one at all, you know. Just… My mind is a blank on it. I don’t know.” Then, the unthinkable happened. He uttered, "I give up.”
Peter Jackson’s documentary series, 'Get Back,' provides no answers on how Paul and the others managed to make it rain again. We only know that they did, and 'The Long And Winding Road' has always been one of my favorite songs by them. Now, I appreciate it even more, because Paul’s struggle left me with a question to reflect on. Is there an unfinished song in my life? What is left undone? To what project have I said, 'I give up,' and the world may never experience it?
Some food for thought as we finish 2023 and move toward a new year with hopes of fulfillment. If you have an unfinished song in your life that you want to complete, here are some tips.
Start small - dedicate just 10 minutes a day to revisiting that unfinished project.
Break down the project into manageable steps and set achievable goals.
Seek out inspiration and support from others who share your passion.
Remember, perfection is overrated - embrace the process and enjoy the journey.

WILL A. I. REPLACE TEACHERS?
My fascination with AI started as an early adopter, playing with GPT chat when most people around me hadn't heard of it, and then among the first to use Bard with a VPN, before it was even available in Brazil. As a comic-strip developer, I was captivated by its potential to spark creative ideas and brainstorming scenarios. As a private English teacher, AI has become an invaluable tool as one of my educational resources, helping me craft engaging lessons and personalize the learning experience for each adult student. From brainstorming unique grammar exercises to designing structured conversation prompts, and even formulating relevant questions based on the books my students devour, AI has become a catalyst for innovation in my class experience. And I believe it holds the potential to revolutionize the way we teach and learn languages in the future.
And after watching Google's Gemini demonstration last night, a thought-provoking discussion emerges: can technology fully substitute human educators in language learning? While AI undeniably offers advantages, I find it intriguing to explore the distinctive qualities of the human spirit that contribute to this educational journey.
AI excels at data analysis, personalizing learning paths, and offering instant feedback. However, it falls short in empathy, emotional intelligence, and adaptability—essential elements for effective learning. It can't grasp the subtleties of human communication, the impact of supportive relationships, or the spark of inspiration that fuels a passion for language.
Human teachers, on the other hand, can attune to a student's emotional state, creating a nurturing environment for development. They customize teaching approaches, nurturing critical thinking and fostering creative expression. Recognizing even small victories, they motivate students to overcome challenges. This human connection cultivates confidence, sparks creativity, and propels successful language acquisition.
In essence, while AI provides valuable tools to enrich the learning journey, it should complement rather than replace the human touch. Let's appreciate the synergy of technology and the irreplaceable spirit of human educators, collaborating to shape a future where language learning is not only effective but also profoundly inspiring.

As a private English teacher, I strive to showcase the unique experiences my classes offer, which is why I provide a free trial class. Today, I'd like to share some images that capture the essence of my teaching approach and give you a glimpse into my class experience. I call this activity "The Virtual Day Trip." It was developed during the COVID-19 pandemic when we were all in isolation behind closed doors.. During this type of lesson, my private student virtually transports me to a place in the world that holds personal significance for them. They articulate, in English, the reasons behind its meaning, the stories woven into its fabric, and what makes it exceptionally special to them. This exercise allows students to immerse themselves in the subject matter, express themselves authentically, and use English to communicate their thoughts.
This virtual day trip serves as a symbolic representation of the essence of all my classes. As an educator, it's crucial for my students to understand that I am committed to exploring English with them wherever their interests may lead.
Are you interested in exploring where your English can take you? Let’s have a free trial. Where you go, I will follow.
