Meet the Speakers: Christina Wang

University of California at Los Angeles, USA

Christina Wang, MD is a Professor of Medicine and Assistant Dean in Clinical and Translational Sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She is the Associate Director of the UCLA Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and a faculty member of the Division of Endocrinology, Department of Medicine, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute (Harbor-UCLA/LA BioMed), Torrance, California. She was a former Professor of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong. She is an internationally renowned andrologist/endocrinologist and a clinical and basic investigator/educator.

Dr. Wang has been involved in many funded basic and clinical research studies. Her current clinical research studies include androgen replacement therapy, hormonal male contraceptive development, androgen metabolism, aging in men, and environment effects on s***m quality. She is the director of the CLIA licensed Endocrine and Metabolic Research Laboratory and developed state of the art measurements for steroid hormones. Her basic research studies are focused on the regulation of s***matogenesis and a XXY mouse model. The research spans from understanding the mechanisms of cellular action of hormones in the te**is to physiological/pharmacological studies in vivo in rodent models. She is a world leader in efforts to develop a safe, effective, and reversible hormonal male contraceptive. As the former Chairperson of the Task Force Methods for the Regulation of Male Fertility of the World Health Organization (WHO), she designed many multicenter trials including the development and oversight of the pivotal study establishing the contraceptive efficacy of hormonally induced suppression of s***matogenesis. She is a co-director of the NICHD supported Contraceptive Clinical Trials Network Centers at . She was a chair and member of the expert group that edited the 3rd, 4th, most recently the 5th edition of the WHO Laboratory Manual on Semen Analyses, the gold standard for andrology laboratories throughout the world.

She has authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications, reviews and abstracts in endocrinology mainly on male reproductive biology including characterization of the pharmacokinetics and efficacy of androgens in men, trials of hormonal male contraceptive, regulation of germ cell apoptosis, and reproductive aging in the rat model. She edited a book on Male Reproductive Function and contributed many chapters in books on male reproduction, including Cecil's textbook of Medicine, Campbell's Urology, and the Leydig Cell. She is a recognized world leader on andrology and has been an invited keynote/ plenary/symposium speaker at many national and international conferences in andrology and endocrinology. She has been a superb role model and mentor for many students, endocrinologists and andrologists throughout her career. Supported by several NIH grants, she has aggressively advocated increased opportunities for women and minorities in biomedical research.

Dr. Wang had been Associate Editor of the International Journal of Andrology and served on the editorial board of the Journal of Andrology from 1994 to 1997. She is currently on the Editorial Board of Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. She has served on NIH study sections.
She served on many committees of the American Society of Andrology throughout the years. She was the Program Chair in 2005 and Vice President of the ASA from 2005-2006, President from 2006-2007, and Past President 2007-2008. Dr. Wang served on the Executive Committee of the International Society of Andrology from 1985 to 1989, Secretary 2001 to 2005, and chair of the Program Committee of the International Congress of Andrology 2005-2009. She is the current president of the International Society of Andrology (2009-2013).
