What is a Pronoun?

In grammar, a pronoun is defined as a word or phrase that may be substituted for a noun or noun phrase, which once replaced, is known as the pronoun’s antecedent. How is this possible? In a nutshell, it’s because pronouns can do everything that nouns can do. A pronoun can act as a subject, direct object, indirect object, object of the preposition, and more.
Without pronouns, we’d have to keep on repeating nouns, and that would make our speech and writing repetitive, not to mention cumbersome. Most pronouns are very short words. Examples include:
He
She
They
It
We
Who
As mentioned, pronouns are usually used to replace nouns, however they can also stand in for certain adverbs, adjectives, and other pronouns. Anytime you want to talk about a person, animal, place or thing, you can use pronouns to make your speech or writing flow better.

Types of Pronouns

Pronouns can be divided into numerous categories as showed in the chart, take a look.

Pronoun Rules

There are a few important rules for using pronouns. As you read through these rules and the examples in the next section, notice how the pronoun rules are followed. Soon you’ll see that pronouns are easy to work with.

Subject pronouns may be used to begin sentences. For example: We did a great job.
Subject pronouns may also be used to rename the subject. For example: It was she who decided we should go to Hawaii.
Indefinite pronouns don’t have antecedents. They are capable of standing on their own. For example: No one likes the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard.
Object pronouns are used as direct objects, indirect objects, and objects of prepositions. These include: you, me, him, her, us, them, and it. For example: David talked to her about the mistake.
Possessive pronouns show ownership. They do not need apostrophes. For example: The cat washed its whiskers.

Como usar 'To Use', 'Used to'

Tal como acontece com muitas coisas na vida, as palavras aparentemente mais fáceis em Inglês são muitas vezes aquelas que causam a maioria dos problemas aos falantes não-nativos. “Use” é uma palavra que surge regularmente no idioma Inglês, e raramente causa muitos problemas ao falante fluente.

No entanto, ao aprender inglês, pode ser empregado tanto como um verbo quanto como um substantivo e tem muitas utilidades diferentes que podem fazer com que seja difícil saber quando usá-lo corretamente. Saiba como usar To Use, Used to e To be used to

Percebe-se que, quando a palavra é usada como um verbo, o “s” é pronunciado como um “z”. Quando a palavra é usada como um substantivo, a sua pronúncia rima com “juice” (suco).

Verbo To Use

O significado mais popular e mais simples de “use” é o ato de realizar uma tarefa com algum tipo de ferramenta. Por exemplo, você pode usar um garfo para comer seu jantar (use a fork to eat your dinner), ou usar um pano para limpar um vazamento (use a cloth to mop a spill). É uma palavra do tempo presente (present tense) para descrever como você atualmente faz as coisas, que, é claro, podem ser alteradas para diferentes tempos verbais.

I used a pen to write my note.

Eu usei uma caneta para escrever minha nota.

I use the font Times New Roman when writing essays.

Eu uso a fonte Times New Roman quando estou escrevendo redações.

I will use my gift card at the restaurant tonight.

Vou usar o meu cartão de presente no restaurante esta noite.

Substantivo Used to

No entanto, “use” é uma palavra muito versátil, e a frase “I used to” tem um significado muito diferente. Refere-se a ações passadas que você fez regularmente, mas que já não faz mais.

I used to enjoy a hot chocolate before bed, but now I prefer a glass of water.

Eu costumava tomar um chocolate quente antes de dormir, mas agora eu prefiro um copo de água.

She used to have long hair, but she recently had it cut off.

Ela costumava ter cabelos longos, mas ela os cortou recentemente.

They used to be close friends, but then one of them moved away.

Eles costumavam ser amigos íntimos, mas, então, um deles se afastou.

Expressão “To be used to”

A expressão “to be used to something” também traz a ideia de ações passadas ou coisas que aconteceram antes, mas sugere que o falante está familiarizado com essas ações, está relativamente de acordo com elas, e está esperando que elas continuem.

I am used to waking up at 6am.

Estou acostumado a acordar às 6h.

– 06h é a hora que ele geralmente acorda.

They are used to travelling in first class.

You look like you could use some more sleep.

He could use some help putting up that shelf.

Use ou use up = consumir ou terminar
You can use up all of the milk.

Substantivos:

Use = capacidade ou o ato de utilizar algo
When my flatmates aren’t home, I enjoy full use of the kitchen without having to share things.
Quando meus colegas de casa não estão em casa, gosto de plena utilização da cozinha sem ter que dividir as coisas.

Use = o propósito de um objeto

Coconut oil has many beauty and culinary uses.
O óleo de coco tem muitos usos na beleza e na culinária.

Does that wall switch have a use?

Use = valor ou razão (normalmente usado pela negativa)
He tried his best, but it was no use.
Ele tentou o seu melhor, mas foi inútil.

There is no use trying to persuade me otherwise.
Não adianta tentar me convencer de outra forma.

Você também pode tornar-se “useful”, o que significa ser útil através de uma ação. E um objeto pode ser “useful” se ele te ajudar a completar uma tarefa. O oposto disso é “useless” o que significa que uma pessoa ou objeto não tenha sido útil, ou melhor, tenha sido inútil.
