After studying energy and batteries, Year 5 students explored the environmental impact of batteries and learned why their correct disposal is essential. Through research, they investigated how batteries can harm the environment when they are not disposed of or recycled properly, and they reflected on the importance of responsible waste management.
To put their knowledge into practice, students participated in a United Nations (UN) debate simulation focused on battery disposal and recycling around the world. Each student represented a different country and researched its perspectives, challenges, and possible actions regarding battery waste and recycling.
During the simulation, students discussed the global challenges related to battery disposal and worked collaboratively to propose solutions. Their goal was to negotiate and develop strategies to reduce the environmental impact of batteries, increase recycling rates, and raise awareness among nations about the importance of proper battery disposal.
The activity allowed students to go beyond understanding the science behind batteries and apply their knowledge to a real-world global issue. By taking on the role of country representatives, they developed their communication, critical thinking, research, collaboration, argumentation, and problem-solving skills, while also recognizing that environmental challenges require cooperation and shared responsibility among nations.

Pilhas, reciclagem e responsabilidade global.
