On 13th September, 1598, Philip II, King of Spain, and one-time King of England died. He was 71 years old and worn out by the merciless workload he took on. Son of the Emperor Charles V, Philip took on half of his father’s vast territories in 1556 when Charles retired. Philip took on the mantle of King of Spain and Duke of Burgundy, as well as the territories in the New World. He was already King of Naples and King of England as the consort of Mary I. (More on Mary here. http://bit.ly/1MGX9V9 It was Philip’s destiny to rule in a time of ever-deepening divisions between Catholics and Protestants. Less pragmatic than his father, he saw his role as Catholic champion of Europe, a position that, apart from the sheer impossibility of undoing the Reformation, was never going to be supported by the French kings. Philip scored some successes – he finally defeated the French in the Italian Wars, establishing a Spanish dominance of Italy that would last for another two hundred years. He also made possible the defeat of the Turks at the Battle of Lepanto, and incorporated Portugal under his rule. He failed, however, to maintain control of the Netherlands, or reimpose Catholicism in England. He died in his enormous palace of the Escorial, and was succeed by his son by his fourth marriage (to his niece!). His daughter by his third marriage, the Archduchess Isabella Clara Eugenia, was named as a possible successor to her distant cousin, Elizabeth I of England. Pic by Titian

The 9th September 1513 was one of the most momentous, and saddest, days in the history of Scotland. On that day, King James IV (pic) led his troops into battle at a remote place in Northumberland called Branxton Moor, now known as Flodden. The Scots army was bigger, better equipped, and, initially, better positioned than the English. The English however, had the advantage of a commander who, although over seventy, was a clever and insightful general. Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey was a veteran of the Battle of Bosworth, and years of skirmishing on the Border. He knew James well, having accompanied the young Margaret Tudor, James’ wife to her wedding ten years before. He used this knowledge to entice James out of the commanding position, and to control his own men effectively. James, his twenty-year old illegitimate son, Alexander, and a host of Scottish Earls and lords were killed. Read more here http://bit.ly/1Kv9nRn

On 7th September 1533, Henry VIII’s second wife, Anne Boleyn, gave birth to their first child. The couple had been certain that a son would be born to vindicate Henry’s long struggle to have his first marriage annulled. They were disappointed by the birth of a girl. They named her Elizabeth, after both her grandmothers, and assured themselves that a brother would soon follow. Twenty-five years later, Elizabeth took the throne, and her forty-five-year reign shaped the religious, political and cultural nation of England for centuries. For many, Elizabeth remains the best monarch England has ever had. Read more about this remarkable woman here http://bit.ly/2plFb2O Portrait by Hilliard © NPG
