In Portuguese, we often use the verb “fazer” (to do) when talking about practicing a sport. “Eu faço futebol” can mean that I train and practice football in order to learn and improve the fundamentals of the sport. This is different from “jogar futebol”, which usually emphasizes actually playing a game, often simply for fun. The same distinction can be made with other sports.

For example: Eu faço natação = I practice swimming. Eu faço tênis = I practice tennis. Eu faço judô = I practice judo. Eu faço capoeira = I practice capoeira. In these expressions, fazer (to do) focuses more on the practice, training, and learning of the sport, while jogar (to play) can refer to playing it recreationally. “Eu faço futebol terças e quintas” can therefore be translated as “I practice football on Tuesdays and Thursdays.”

So, when a Brazilian says “Eu faço futebol,” think of training, practicing, and developing skills, rather than simply playing a game for fun.
