Year 8 – Urca Site – went on a Geography fieldtrip around the Guanabara Bay, consisting of exploring the bay in a boat and investigating varying levels of pollution present, supporting the “Water Pollution” theme in Year 8 Geography syllabus.
The trip encompassed the port, Ilha do Governador and Niterói, also passing by the Historical Downtown, Fiscal Island, the Rio-Niterói Bridge and the fortresses of the Bay (São João and Niterói).
Learning outside the classroom can also enhance student’s understanding and foster a deeper engagement with the world.

Barra School welcomed back our alumna Rafaela Pires, a proud member of the Class of 2024. She will begin her second year of the Biochemistry degree at the University of Pennsylvania this coming August and, over the next few months, will be conducting research into the molecular mechanisms of type 1 diabetes at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, focusing on identifying avenues that could contribute to the development of a cure for the disease.
Rafaela, who received the Director’s Award in the year she graduated from TBS, has always stood out for her dedication to her studies, her commitment to social initiatives supported by the school, and her excellent relationships with her classmates and teachers.
It was wonderful to have Rafaela back with us. We are proud of all she has achieved and we wish her all the best!

Our Upper Primary Student Council students – Barra School - were cordially invited to visit the NGO One by One to get to know their work.
One by One focuses on collecting bottle tops, selling them to recycling companies and then using the funds raised from the sales to purchase wheelchairs for individuals in need.
During their visit, the student council members worked as volunteers, sorting the bottle tops by colour, which is essential for recycling as it increases the resale value. The students also learned about the impact of small recycling initiatives, seeing firsthand how these collected items could contribute to life-changing resources like wheelchairs for people who face mobility challenges.
It was a meaningful day that allowed them to make a tangible difference while fostering teamwork and a sense of social responsibility.
In a closely contested football match, the student team managed to overcome the Mr Steve Lang (Director) and Mr Andy Malcom (Head of Botafogo Site) team. Football at break time is a must!
Earlier this month, a number of students of Urca Site and Barra School took part in the 3rd edition of the BritishMUN conference, hosted at our Urca Site. As a conference focused on junior delegates (KS3), it provided our young MUNers a safe and nurturing environment to put their MUN skills into practice. Students were very engaged prior to the conference and during the event, and were consistently resilient in doing their best and pushing beyond their comfort zone while facing the significant challenges posed by Model UN.
Each of our delegates put in a lot of work in preparing for the conference, and definitely have a bright future ahead in the Model UN! Congratulations to our students and to our MUN Directors Ms Mariana Martins’2004 and Mr Alex Toledo for their outstanding work!

We are very proud to share an important achievement of our Urca Site Year 11 student, Julia Campos! After a week of fiercely competitive games between the main clubs in Brazil, representing the Fluminense F.C., Julia was champion of the 'Qualifying Round A' of the Brazilian Interclub Championship U17! The next step in this tournament is to compete with the other 3 teams that won the 'Qualifying Round B' at the CBV in Saquarema! Congratulations to Julia for this amazing achievement and resilience through this very demanding career! The British School will be cheering for her!

In a lovely way to wrap up the Learning Unit “Who Am I”, Year 2 parents of Botafogo Site were invited to participate in the Exit Point with their children for a hands-on creative activity! Students painted a tree, which they used as a background to create their own family tree together. Thank you to all parents for being part of this special moment!

The 44th COBIS Annual Conference, sponsored by Cambridge, took place on 9 to 11 May as a face-to-face conference and exhibition, in London. This year’s edition, with the theme “Listen. Learn. Lead.”, explored how our sector continues to make a positive impact - evolving through connectivity, innovation, and purpose. We are proud to share that TBSRJ was present represented by Mr Jeremy Wong, our Deputy Director; Ms Mônica Teles, our Head of Human Resources; and Ms Renata Jardim, our Educational Staff Development Coordinator. They had the opportunity to listen and learn from renowned professionals who were speakers at the Conference, to continue the excellent work leading our warm, vibrant learning community.
