Braz-Tesol Rio Chapter

Braz-Tesol Rio Chapter www.braztesol.org.br Everyone was thrilled at this perspective for we all knew the importance of BRAZ-TESOL work.

The chapter was founded in 2003 when Vera Bradford, BRAZ-TESOL President at the time, invited a group of ELT professionals from several well-known institutions in the city to get engaged in a new task: to promote events aiming at bringing the ELT community in Rio opportunities for professional development. The pioneers in that endeavor were Alda Coimbra (Colégio Pedro II), Alice Estacca (CCAA), Bebel Cunha (Colégio Don Quixote) , Bill McDavid (CCAA), Janaína Cardoso (SENAC) , Inés Miller (PUC), Sheila Lima (Curso Oxford), Patricia Blower (Cultura Inglesa), and Maria do Socorro Guimarães (Ibeu).

We are thrilled to welcome Vania Furtado as our guest speaker at The Human Side of Language!

With extensive experience in English language education, academic leadership and teacher development, Vania will invite us to pause and reflect on one of the most important questions facing educators today:

What does it mean to teach in a world that is too much, too fast, and too fragmented?

Drawing on research into attention, social acceleration, burnout and teacher wellbeing, Vania will explore how fragmentation shapes the way we work, experience our profession and connect with our students.

Because when information is everywhere, attention, human connection and meaning become even more valuable.

Come meet Vania, share ideas, and be part of a morning dedicated to the human side of what we do.

Meet our speaker: Jay Rodrigues!

What if your teaching career were a collection of gifts? Some you unwrap, keep, and use every day. Others you put aside, not because they were useless, but because you never know when they might be exactly what a learner needs.

At The Human Side of Language, Jay takes us on a personal and inspiring journey through 15 years in English Language Teaching, revisiting the approaches and techniques that have shaped his practice, from the classic PPP to the unorthodox Dogme ELT.

Because teaching is not about finding one perfect method. It is about building a repertoire, learning from every experience, and knowing when to use what, for whom, and why.

Come unwrap Jay’s teaching journey with us and maybe rediscover a few “gifts” of your own along the way.

There is something deeply meaningful about having Paulo Torres as one of our plenary speakers at The Human Side of Language.

Paulo is not only our BRAZ-TESOL Members Director. He is someone who is always willing to support others, generously sharing his expertise, his knowledge, his guidance, and, sometimes, simply his time. The kind of person who knows that supporting someone does not always mean having the answers. Sometimes, it means listening, asking the right question, and giving someone the space to reflect and find their own way forward.

And perhaps that is why The Power of Not Yet feels so right for this event.

Because learning is a journey. Teaching is a journey. Becoming who we are as educators is a journey. And along the way, there are so many moments when “I can’t” can feel like the end of the road. But what if it is simply “I can’t… yet”?

We are truly honoured to welcome Paulo to The Human Side of Language and to have him share a message that goes far beyond a growth mindset. A message about possibility, patience, hope, and believing in people and in what they can become.

Sometimes, all someone needs is for another person to believe in their yet. 💚

Join us on October 3rd at IBEU Copacabana. Registration is open. Link in bio.

Do you have a story, an idea, or a perspective worth sharing?

As part of The Human Side of Language, we are inviting educators, researchers, language professionals, and passionate voices to join us as guest speakers for a 30-minute talk.

We are looking for proposals that explore the human side of language and learning — from cognition and identity to inclusion, emotion, motivation, belonging, and the experiences that shape the way we learn and communicate.

If you have an idea that could inspire, challenge perspectives, or spark meaningful conversations, we would love to hear from you.

Submit your proposal through the link in our bio
Proposals accepted until Saturday, September 12th

Maybe your perspective is the one someone needs to hear.

We’re thrilled to announce Rodolfo Mattiello as the first Plenary Speaker of The Human Side of Language!

His talk, “Cognition and Language Acquisition: What Students Learn in Language Teaching Programs,” will take us into the fascinating connection between cognition, the brain, language acquisition and human interaction, and invite us to rethink what actually happens when students learn a language.

Drawing on Cognitive Linguistics research, Rodolfo will explore questions such as: What do students really know when they learn a language? What do they learn throughout this process? And are our classroom activities truly engaging their cognitive skills?

A conversation to inspire us to look beyond language and put the human side of learning at the centre.

We are excited to invite you to The Human Side of Language, a special morning dedicated to exploring the human processes behind language learning and teaching. On October 3rd, from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, we will come together at IBEU’s Copacabana unit for a meaningful morning of reflection, inspiration, and conversations about connection, cognition, growth, and the people at the heart of education. Because language is more than words, it is about understanding, belonging, and creating learning experiences that truly connect with our learners. 💚

Registration is now open! Join us! Link in bio.

A special thank you to IBEU | Inglês Global for partnering with us and helping make this event possible.
