GEORGE THE TROPHY BEARER

Who does not know Saint George the great martyr? This Roman officer's fame has travelled across the world and his name is everywhere. Happy name day to our many friends who bear the numerous variants of his name: George, Georgios, Yorgo, Georges, Jorg, Jorgen, Jorge, Đorđe, Georgiu, Giorgio, Jirjis, Jerji, Jorj, Giorgis, Jordi, Jiří, Gio, Giorgi, Gjiogji, Joris, Qiáozhì, Georgina, Georgette, Georgia, Giorgia, Jorgina, Khodr, Haydar, Morsi, and many others! Have a blessed name day!

GEORGE, HISTORY AND DRAGONS

It is extremely hard to know the historical story of George as legends added to it and impossible to distinguish them today. He was said to be the son of a Cappadocian Greek father, a citizen from the Roman gens of the Anicii, and a mother of Greek and Jewish extraction from Lydda in the Holy Land. After his father's death George lived in Lydda, became a Roman officer at the beginning of the Fourth Century, and later martyred for his faith in Nicomedia or in Berytus (Beirut) under Diocletian (where Beirut's bay still bears his name.)

George was then a Roman military martyr. Later, traditions of him saving a princess became current. Some of the first accounts of him as saver began in Cappadocia and Paphlagonia, where a "mounted knight, George" saved a boy enslaved by Saracens and "was to be used for their emir's pleasure." Later legends made him save a princess who happened to be his fiancee.

His dragon story is the most known: the first dragon-slayer saint was Theodore. George's story appropriated the accounts of Theodore and made the dragon the symbol of all evil. Undoubtedly, the dragon-slayer saints' legends are based on the story of Perseus, the ancient Greek hero, who killed a sea monster to save Andromeda, daughter of the king of Ethiopia. There is also Bellerophon spearing Chimera, a recurrent representation in ancient Greek art. All this converged with the Biblical story of Leviathan.

George also appropriated the veneration people used to give to Gaia, the mother-goddess of Earth. George's name means "the vinedresser", "the earth worker" or "the farmer." In this, George is similar to another great military saint, Demetrius, as this last assimilated the cults given to the goddess Demeter. In Muslim countries Saint George is venerated under the name of Khodr, that is, "the green-maker", and also related to earth. In this regard George's name is Biblical and in its form γεωργός it is mentioned many times in the New Testament, for example in John 15:1 "I am the vine, and my Father is the vinedresser γεωργός".

THE PATRON SAINT OF MANY PLACES

George is the patron saint of numerous nations and regions. He is the protector of Georgia, England, Ethiopia, and Catalonia. He is the protector of English then British monarchs. He is the patron of Beirut, Moscow, and Genoa. Too many places are under his aegis. The fame of this eastern Roman officer is universal.

He is also the patron saint of farmers and earth workers. A prayer to him says:

Liberator of captives, defender of the poor,
physician of the sick, and champion of monarchs,
O trophy-bearer, Great Martyr George,
intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved

Did you know you speak a little astronomy every week? 🌙✨

The names of the weekdays are more than just words on your calendar — they carry echoes of the night sky. Ancient people connected the seven visible celestial bodies 🪐 to their gods, and those links still survive in the names we use today.

Monday comes from the Moon 🌙
Sunday comes from the Sun ☀️
And the other days trace back to gods associated with the planets we can see without a telescope 🔭

So every week, you’re actually naming the Sun, the Moon, and the classical planets without even realizing it 🌞

Language, mythology, and astronomy have been connected for thousands of years — and your calendar still keeps that story alive ✨

Which weekday surprised you the most? 👀
