Researchers call for a better understanding of implementation in conservation science, based on reviewing the success of the ‘biodiversity hotspot’ concept. 🗣️
A new paper from DICE and the Wildlife Conservation Society, Mozambique, has revealed that one of the most influential ideas in conservation science — the biodiversity hotspot approach — has been widely misinterpreted for over two decades.
Published today in Nature Ecology & Evolution, the article by Professor Bob Smith (DICE) and Dr Hermenegildo Matimele (Wildlife Conservation Society Mozambique) marks the 25th anniversary of the landmark Nature paper that first mapped global biodiversity hotspots. The authors argue that while the hotspot concept is recognised as a breakthrough in identifying conservation priorities, most academics are unaware of the mechanisms that made it work in practice. This lack of awareness has hampered attempts to develop new approaches for prioritising conservation action.
Bob Smith said: “The hotspot approach for guiding conservation action was groundbreaking, but its real-world success came from how it was funded and implemented. These details have been largely absent from the academic record, meaning many researchers have missed what actually made it effective.”
The authors argue that this is likely to be a widespread problem and highlight the need for stronger collaboration between researchers and practitioners, arguing that co-production of knowledge is essential to ensure scientific advances lead to tangible conservation outcomes.

Dellapé P. M., Melo, M. C.: "Ischnodemus pilcomayo, a New Species from Argentina, and Description of the Male of I. pullus Slater and Wilcox (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Blissidae)"
A new species of the cosmopolitan genus Ischnodemus, I. pilcomayo, new species from the Rio Pilcomayo National Park, Formosa Province, Argentina, and the male of Ischnodemus pullus Slater and Wilcox, 1969 are described, including dorsal and lateral habitus and male genitalia images. Photographs of the female holotype of I. pullus and the macropterous male holotype of Reticulatodemus nitidus Slater and Wilcox, 1966 are given, together with dorsal and lateral habitus images of the brachypterous form of the latter species.
