Na última semana foi publicado o terceiro artigo fruto da dissertação de mestrado de Juann Abreu. Nele descrevemos a anatomia funcional dos músculos mastigatórios em nove espécies de marsupiais didelfídeos, revelando um padrão anatómico generalizado com diferenças relacionadas à morfologia do crânio. A variação nos dados miológicos quantitativos e na força de mordida estimada foi relacionada principalmente com o tamanho, e o aumento da força de mordida suporta a ideia de uma diversificação da dieta associada ao aumento do tamanho. Esta é o primeiro estudo a abordar a diversidade da musculatura mastigatória nos Didelphidae. O artigo pode ser lido gratuitamente no link abaixo.

The third paper from Juann Abreu's MSc thesis was published last week. In it we describe the functional anatomy of the masticatory muscles in nine species of didelphid marsupials, revealing a generalized anatomical pattern with differences related to skull morphology. The variation in quantitative myological data and in estimated bite force was mainly related to size, and the increase in bite force supports the idea of a diversification of diet associated with an increase in size. This is the first study to address the diversity of masticatory muscles in Didelphidae. The paper can be read for free at the link provided below.
