In mouth or mixed breathing, every adaptation occurs to create a channel that facilitates air entry through the mouth instead of the nose. The brain looks for the easiest way to access it, in its mission to preserve life. The infra and supra hyoid muscles lower the tongue and elevate the trachea to facilitate the entry of air through the mouth, that is, compensation for a structure programmed to receive food.
This maneuver stresses the brain and exhausts it and the body energetically, in an incorrect compensation, as the system is programmed for air to enter through the nose and food to enter through the mouth. This compensatory adaptive confusion is dysfunctional and unhealthy in the medium and long term. This dysfunctional adaptation will generate comorbidities.
In this adaptation of function, the jaw, a floating structure, is pulled downwards and backwards by the numerous muscle groups that are inserted into it. In children it is very harmful, as in addition to inhibiting the maximum potential for mandibular growth and development, it impairs mandibular postural positioning on the face. The muscles adapted for respiratory compensation function as “reins” braking and inhibiting the maximum potential for mandibular growth and mandibular postural positioning on the face.
Full nasal breathing in air volume is an essential condition and vital for the harmony and balance of the Stomatognathic system and the maximum expression of facial growth and development in children and adolescents.
It is also a fundamental condition, in adults, for the improvement of jaw joint disorders. Full volume breathing, via the nose, qualifies sleep and purifies stress, as it creates a qualified and complete sleep cycle.

The muscles adapted for respiratory compensation function as “reins” braking and inhibiting the maximum potential for mandibular growth and mandibular postural positioning on the face.
The disruption of muscular balance due to the lowering of the tongue and the retraction of the mandible, hyperactivates and hypertonifies the buccinator, which deforms the maxilla, forms the high palate and tilts the alveolar process and teeth inwards. There is then an imbalance in the muscular package that becomes hyperactive and hypertensive, which atrophies and deforms the faces and dental arches and inhibits their maximum potential for growth and development.
