Carnival Vocabulary
Well, let's talk about vocabulary then.
Terça-feira de Carnaval (Carnival Tuesday), also known as Fat Tuesday, is the Tuesday that precedes Ash Wednesday and is the last day of Carnival.
Quarta-feira de cinzas (Ash Wednesday) is the first day of Lent according to the Western Christian calendar. In Brazil, weonly start working after noon. That is, it is ahalf-holiday.
Escolas de Samba (Samba Schools) are community associations or clubs, usually associated with a neighborhood, which aims to represent their community through music and dance. During the carnival, these schools participate in competitions with other samba schools via large parades.
Desfile de Escola de Samba (Samba School Parade) is a big event during the carnival in which a number of samba schools compete for the title of champion of the carnival. The biggest parade of samba schools takes place in Rio de Janeiro. It’s a two-day parade (in Rio de Janeiro, besides the other cities). You can watch the parades in person at the Sambódromo, or you can watch live on TV. I remember when I was a child, I loved watching the samba school parades.
Fantasia (Costume) is the clothing we wear to celebrate carnival. It can be just a cheerful, colorful outfit with glitter and sequins, or you can dress up as something or someone, more or less like the Halloween costumes here in the United States, but with a more cheerful and fun tone.
Carnaval de rua (Street Carnival) is what we call the outdoor celebrations. Salvador and Rio de Janeiro are the cities that host the largest street carnival in Brazil.
Trio elétrico (Parade float band) is a term used to refer to an adapted truck with sound equipment to transmit live music on the move. During carnival, these trucks carry bands singing live music throughout the city.
Pular carnaval (Carnival jumping) means celebrating the carnival. This expression refers to the fact that usually when we go to a carnival party, we are always jumping because of the lively music. So, when someone says they're going to jump carnival, that person simply means that he/she is going to a carnival party.
Sambar (to Samba) is a verb that means to dance samba, which is the style of music most played during the carnival. Contrary to popular belief, not every Brazilian knows how to dance samba, but most Brazilians can easily recognize samba.
