What is the difference between cyclone, hurricane, tornado and twister?

According to the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones all describe the same phenomenon: strong and huge tropical storms with circular wind. Meteorologists use each one to describe a different region of the world. "Hurricane" is used in the Atlantic and Northeast Pacific, which is why we in the States hear this term the most. In the Northwest Pacific, "typhoon" is used ( in the Philipines, for instance ), and over in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean, "cyclone" is used to describe the same weather event ( coast of India, for example )
Tornados form over land and are much smaller in size. A tornado is a violent windstorm characterised by a twisting, funnel-shaped cloud. In the United States, twister is used as a colloquial term for tornado.
