This is what can happen if you decorate with words in a foreign language! Be careful! Haha
There are a lot of expressions that we use (in all languages) where we have to question WHERE on earth did this come from. This article explains the origins of the expression. "to blow smoke up one's ass."

This means that the person is complimenting and flattering the other person in an inauthentic way.

ex: "For a year now, Alina keeps telling me how wonderful my products are and even likes every single one of my posts on IG. I'm tired of her blowing smoke up my ass. She obviously doesn't like them that much, or she would buy something."

Well, THAT was fun!
I just came upon an old blog post and audio I did many years ago. It’s about interjections in English.

Kinda cool stuff! Haha

When you learn a new language, grammar truly is important. Learning correct punctuation is also necessary if your goal is to be understood.
Here’s a fun video where the guy speaks false languages. He shows how each language SOUNDS to someone who doesn’t speak the language.

He did a great job!
I was thinking of making a video on this topic but Seth beat me to it!

A little humor for you.

I have felt like this many times in the first few years I lived in Brazil. I felt like a "little child in the carseat" and had no idea what was going on around me!

English compared to Portuguese. :-P

01/10/2019

What word is hard for you to pronounce?

24/09/2019

Two phrasal verbs that you might not know:

“To have (someone) over” - you invite people to your house for any number of reasons.

“To come by” - in Portuguese, you would say “aparecer”. It’s an informal phrase. Nothing is really planned, but they are going to “hang out” with you.

These types of phrasal verbs are best understood within context, and within conversation.

I offer Conversation classes online if you’d like to “get better at” (improve) your English. Send me a message for details!

Very often, I get frustrated when I can't express myself in my second language, which is Portuguese.

And when I see the Portuguese subtitles placed on videos that are in my native language, it ALSO frustrates me that the person doing the subtitles can not express what is REALLY said.

In the case of this image, what the guy REALLY said was--

"It's like... God just hooked you right the f**k up...!!!!"

And what is written is, "it's like God blessed you. "

It is so watered down and lacks emotion.

Have you wanted to be able to express your emotions in English?

Have you felt misunderstood when you speak with native English speakers?

I can help you!

With the right vocabulary... and the right tone of voice. And the right phrases.....I can teach you HOW to express what you REALLY want to say.

This is one of my superpowers! :-)

Send me a message to get more information about my classes.

15 Strange Habits I Picked Up Overseas

Learning a language is a WHOLE lot more than words!

This article talks about how the second culture CHANGES the way you think and act.

So, yes, living in the country of your target language boosts learning a lot!

If you can train your mind to do everyday things in the second language and IN THE WAY THE CULTURE DOES IT, you can learn almost as quickly without having to leave your home country!

Want tips for how to do this? Send me a message inbox.

This is Brazil’s new slogan for tourism.

The marketing campaign folks should have consulted with a native English speaker first!

After talking with several Brazilians about what they were trying to communicate, I can see how they simply translated the word without understanding the potential unspoken meaning behind it.

In my English classes I teach how to avoid “pagando o mico” and I share the “entre linhas” in common English expressions.

What do you understand in this slogan?

15/06/2019

Totally true! I read it just like that!

Ain't that true?

13/06/2019

Yes, my Brazilian lovelies... some people still think you speak “messed up” Spanish. Please forgive them. 😜
