If your industry is young, like cars in the 1920s or EVs when Tesla started, innovation opens the doors. But in a mature industry, copying the right competitors—those close to your level—can be more effective and less risky. Think South Korean for carmakers in the 80s, who imitated Japan and thrived. What was the lesson? Before asking how to innovate, ask when. Sometimes imitation is not weakness—it’s strategy.
