🇧🇷 16 de julho - Dia Mundial das Serpentes
🇺🇸 July 16 - World Snake Day

Today we celebrate one of the most fascinating and misunderstood groups of animals on Earth.

Snakes play essential roles in ecosystems by regulating prey populations, serving as food for other wildlife, and helping maintain healthy and balanced ecosystems. Although often feared, the vast majority of snake species are harmless to people and deserve our respect and protection.

At the Mapinguari Lab, we are proud to study the diversity, evolution, and conservation of snakes, contributing to scientific knowledge and helping protect these remarkable animals.

Happy World Snake Day!

🐸🇧🇷 Novo artigo publicado!

🐸🇺🇸 New paper published!
We are excited to share our latest publication in Systematics and Biodiversity, exploring how Pleistocene climate fluctuations shaped the evolutionary history of the treefrog Boana crepitans across eastern Brazil.
By combining mitochondrial and nuclear DNA, phylogeographic analyses, ecological niche modelling, and paleoclimate reconstruction, we show that Quaternary climate dynamics played a greater role in shaping the species’ evolutionary history than long-standing geographic barriers such as the São Francisco River.

This study is the result of a collaborative effort involving researchers from multiple institutions and highlights the value of integrating genetics, biogeography, and ecological modelling to understand the evolution of Neotropical biodiversity.

New species described!
We are pleased to share the description of *Dendropsophus liliae*, a new treefrog species from the Atlantic Forest mountains of Minas Gerais, Brazil.

The species is currently known from only four localities in the Serra da Mantiqueira and is distinguished by its small size, characteristic coloration, and a unique call among its closest relatives.

The type locality of the species is located in the Serra do Brigadeiro region, near the municipality of Muriaé, Minas Gerais, the same city where Professor Lilinha lived and taught. For this reason, the name *liliae* was chosen in her honor, recognizing an educator who inspired generations of students and helped shape the careers of many biologists in the region.

What determines the characteristics of snakes in the Pantanal and Upper Paraguay River Basin?

We analyzed 145 species and found that environmental gradients influence which species occur in each region. However, ecological traits, such as body size, shape, activity, and diet, are more strongly associated with the microhabitats occupied by species.

In other words: ➡ The environment helps determine who is there. ➡ The microhabitat helps determine how they live.

Happy National Frog Jumping Day! 🐸

From tiny leaf-litter frogs to giant treefrogs leaping through tropical forests, frogs are some of the most incredible jumpers on the planet. Their powerful jumps help them escape predators, catch prey, and move through complex habitats across wetlands, forests, savannas, and mountains.

But frogs are much more than great athletes. They are essential components of ecosystems and important indicators of environmental health. Around the world, amphibians are facing major threats from habitat loss, climate change, pollution, disease, and wildfires.

Even so, there is still so much left to discover. New species continue to be found every year, especially in tropical regions like South America.

So today, take a moment to appreciate frogs, their diversity, and the ecosystems they help sustain.

Hoje é o Save The Frogs Day 🐸💚
